The answer depends on who ran the study
The 3 most-cited studies agree on direction and disagree sharply on the number. Each finds that a real tree has the smaller footprint in any single year, and that an artificial tree can only catch up through reuse.

The American Christmas Tree Association is the artificial-tree industry’s trade group. Its study was peer reviewed by a panel chaired by Harvard’s Tom Gloria, and its funding is still the first thing to know about the lowest figure.
One year of an artificial tree is about 17.9 kg CO2e
The 2018 WAP Sustainability study puts 1 year of an artificial tree at 17.911 kg of CO2 equivalent, assuming it is made in China. A real tree grown for 7 to 8 years came out at 4.875 kg if composted and 7.775 kg if incinerated.
A landfilled real tree came out at -0.105 kg, slightly below zero in the study’s model. On that disposal route an artificial tree never breaks even on climate. Across all impact categories, not just carbon, the study’s break-even is 4.7 years.
The independent study says 20 years
The Ellipsos study, carried out in Montreal in 2009, assumed an artificial tree made in China and kept for 6 years, against a real tree grown 150 km away and burned for energy afterwards. Over those 6 years, the artificial tree’s climate impact was more than 1.5 times the real tree’s.
Dovetail Partners’ 2018 summary of the study puts the break-even at 20 years. The Carbon Trust’s 2023 guidance gives a range of 7 to 20 years, depending on the artificial tree’s weight and materials.
Most US households already chose artificial
An Ipsos poll for the American Christmas Tree Association in October 2025 found that 83% of households planning to put up a tree would use an artificial one. Fortune reported in November 2025 that about 90% of artificial trees sold in the US are made in China, without naming its source.
Real trees are still a large market. The National Christmas Tree Association’s survey counted 21.58 million bought in 2023. The same group says a 6 to 7 ft tree takes about 7 years to grow, and anywhere from 4 to 15.
A real tree wins any single year in all 3 studies
Every study reviewed here favours a real tree in its first year, and its disposal route moves the figure more than anything else. In the WAP model, composting puts it at 4.875 kg and incineration at 7.775 kg, both well under the artificial tree’s 17.911 kg for 1 year.

An artificial tree only pays back if it stays in use
The break-even figures assume the same tree goes up every year. An artificial tree replaced after 2 seasons, because the lights failed or the style dated, loses on every study.
That makes build quality the environmental question. Prelit trees add a second failure point, since a string that dies inside the branches is hard to replace. Owners of both trees below report lighting problems alongside praise.

What the studies cannot tell you
None of the 3 studies measured a specific brand of tree, so no listing can claim a carbon figure from them. They also model transport and disposal assumptions that may not match a given household.
