Towel GSM Explained: What the Weight Tells You

GSM measures density, not thickness
A 600 GSM towel has 600 grams of fabric in every square metre, whatever its thickness; paper is labelled the same way. That makes GSM a measure of density: how much cotton there is for the towel’s size.
Turn GSM into weight with the towel’s size
A towel’s real weight is its GSM times its area, so a figure means little without the size. A 27 x 54 inch bath towel is about 0.94 square metres. At 600 GSM, the Amazon Basics bath towel works out to about 564 grams, 1.24 lbs. At 550 GSM, a Modern Threads bath towel of the same size is about 517 grams.

A bigger towel at the same GSM is much heavier
GSM stays the same however large the towel, so size changes everything. The Utopia Towels bath sheets are 600 GSM like the Amazon Basics towel, but at 35 x 70 inches they cover about 1.58 square metres and weigh about 948 grams each. That is 1.7 times the cotton to wash, carry wet and dry.

A lower GSM can be the better towel for a damp bathroom
More grams of cotton hold more water, which is why a heavy towel feels plush and why it stays damp on the rail. The POLYTE waffle set is 430 GSM microfiber, polyester and polyamide, and POLYTE says it dries faster than traditional fibres. Its 30 x 60 inch bath towel is larger than the cotton ones, so at about 499 grams it weighs nearly what the 550 GSM cotton towel does.

GSM is not quality: loop length and cotton count too
Weight is 1 figure, not the whole towel. Wikipedia’s terrycloth article notes that longer loops absorb more, because they put more surface in contact with the water, and GSM does not tell you loop length. The cotton matters too: ring-spun, Supima and Turkish cotton are named on listings for softness and strength, not for weight. The Lacoste Heritage towel states Supima cotton and no GSM at all.
