The polar vortex may reverse by about 10 November

Forecast models expect the polar vortex to break down in the first half of November, weeks earlier than it ever has. Gizmodo reported on 28 October that 86% of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ model runs showed its winds reversing by 10 November.

The polar vortex is a ring of cold, low-pressure air that spins around the North Pole, high in the stratosphere. While it spins hard, the cold stays in the Arctic. When it weakens, it can stretch and wobble, and cold air can spill south. Forecasters call a full reversal a major sudden stratospheric warming.

US forecasters see no Arctic blast in November

AccuWeather and FOX Weather both expect November to stay largely free of Arctic air, despite the disruption. AccuWeather’s forecast, updated on 1 November, gives the reason: the air in northern Canada is too mild to begin with to make a true Arctic outbreak, and the coldest air in the pattern is heading for Siberia instead.

Temperatures should still drop in parts of the US during the first and second weeks of November, AccuWeather says. It expects the biggest dips in the Southwest, and widespread rain in the East, ending weeks of dry, warm afternoons. FOX Weather expects above-average temperatures across much of the country for most of the month, helped by El Niño.

Colder spells become likelier from late November

The cold, if it comes, is a late-November and December story. FOX Weather expects winter-like temperatures by late November and early December. AccuWeather’s long-range forecaster sees chillier episodes reaching the US in the latter part of November and in December.

Cohen told Gizmodo that a disruption usually takes 2 weeks or more to reach the weather on the ground, and that he would not expect the effects until sometime in December. He also warned that the models have never seen an event this early, so they may struggle with it.

Protect the pipes while the weather is mild

Outdoor faucets and pipes in unheated spaces freeze first, and both are easier to protect before a cold week than during one. An insulated Hedoc cover goes over each outdoor faucet once the hose is off and the line is drained. Duck foam sleeves fit 3/4-inch pipe under a sink or along an exterior wall.

For outdoor faucets

Hedoc Pro Outdoor Faucet Covers for Winter, 2 Pack

2 insulated covers for outdoor faucets, which owners say stay on in wind.

  • Hose bibs on an exposed wall

Don't buy it if

  • A buyer who wants a thicker shell, which splits owners
For exposed pipe

Duck Brand Foam Pipe Covers, 0.75 in x 1 ft, 6 Sticks

Don't buy it if

A pipe in a crawl space or an unheated garage needs more than foam. The Frost King kit is a 6-foot heat cable that switches itself on in the cold. How to prevent frozen pipes has the Red Cross’s full checklist, including the rule never to set the heat below 55°F while you are away.

For a pipe in an unheated space

Frost King HC6A Automatic Electric Heat Cable Kit, 6 ft

A 6-foot electric heat cable kit that warms a pipe automatically in the cold.

Heat cable for the one pipe that runs through a space with no heat.

  • A short run of pipe in a crawl space or garage

Don't buy it if

  • A buyer who expects it to last many winters, which splits owners

Pick a heater before the first cold week

A heater bought in a cold week is bought from whatever is left, so choose one now. A bedroom suits an oil-filled radiator such as the De’Longhi, which has no fan and stays warm after it clicks off. A home office suits a ceramic tower such as the Lasko, which warms the spot you sit in within minutes.

For a bedroom

De'Longhi Oil-Filled Radiator Heater, 1500W

A 1,500-watt oil-filled radiator: no fan, slow to warm, and still warm after it clicks off.

For a spare room, the Amazon Basics radiator states a thermostat, tip-over and overheat protection and an ETL listing in its title. Those 3 safety features are the ones to check on any heater. Space heaters compared matches each type to a room, and space heater watts and safety covers what a 1,500-watt heater does to a circuit.

For a spare room

Amazon Basics Oil-Filled Space Heater, 7 Fins

7 oil-filled fins, 3 heat settings, a thermostat, tip-over and overheat protection, and an ETL mark, all stated in its title.
