The Busiest Thanksgiving Travel Days in 2026
The Sunday after Thanksgiving set TSA's all-time record in 2025, with 3,133,924 people screened. In 2026 that Sunday is 29 November. Here is the day-by-day pattern for flying and driving, and the hours to avoid.

The 2026 figures on this page do not exist yet. TSA and AAA publish their Thanksgiving forecasts in November, and neither had issued one on 17 September 2026. What is published is 2 years in which the same Sunday set the record, and this page maps that pattern onto the 2026 calendar, with Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November.
Sunday 29 November is the likeliest record day
TSA screened 3,133,924 people on Sunday 30 November 2025, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It was the most in the agency’s history, according to Airlines for America. That broke the previous record of 3,096,797, set on 22 June 2025.
The year before followed the same shape. TSA reported about 3.09 million people screened on Sunday 1 December 2024, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which was a record at the time. In 2026 the equivalent Sunday is 29 November.
The airport pattern runs Tuesday, Wednesday, then Sunday and Monday
TSA’s 2024 forecast named 3 peak days: 2.8 million on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, 2.9 million on the Wednesday and more than 3 million on the Sunday after. Airlines for America’s 2025 forecast named Sunday and Monday after the holiday as the busiest days for airlines.

TSA projected 17.8 million people screened over the 8 days from 25 November to 2 December 2025. Airlines for America forecast more than 31 million passengers from 21 November to 1 December 2025, about 2.8 million a day.
Drivers outnumber flyers by about 12 to 1
AAA forecast 81.8 million Americans travelling over Thanksgiving 2025, from 25 November to 1 December, a record and 1.6 million more than in 2024. Of those, 73 million were expected to drive and 6 million to fly. Another 2.5 million were expected to take a bus, train or cruise.
That split means road congestion affects far more travellers than airport lines. AAA had not issued a 2026 figure by 17 September 2026.
The worst hours to drive, day by day
INRIX’s guidance for AAA in 2025 put the worst traffic in the afternoons and evenings on almost every day of the holiday week. Moved onto the 2026 calendar, the same hours read:

INRIX describes Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as the most congested times before the holiday. For the return, it points drivers to Sunday morning.
Flying on Thanksgiving Day avoids both peaks
Thanksgiving Day itself does not appear among TSA’s forecast peak days, and INRIX lists minimal traffic impact on the roads. Leaving on Thursday 26 November and returning on Saturday 28 November or Tuesday 1 December avoids the 2 heaviest windows.

What to pack for a long day in a line

What these figures cannot tell you
TSA’s counts are national totals across more than 3 million people on a peak day, so they do not show conditions at any single airport or checkpoint.
Weather is the other gap. A winter storm over a hub in the week of 23 November 2026 would change every pattern on this page, and no forecast published in September can account for it.
