Do UGGs Run Big? Sizing the Classic Boots

The Classic Mini II comes in whole sizes only, 5 to 12, so a half size has to round. UGG says its Classics start snug and the sheepskin stretches, which tells you which way to go.

This page reads UGG’s own size guide and fit note for its Classic boots, and lists 5 UGG styles a gift buyer is choosing between, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled, worn or tested.

At a glance

UGG Classics start snug, and the sheepskin stretches

UGG’s own page for the Classic Mini II says the Classics may fit slightly snug at first. The sheepskin lining can gradually stretch and shape itself to the foot. So a Classic that feels roomy on day 1 will only get roomier, which is why many pairs end up feeling big.

The Classic Mini II comes in whole sizes only, 5 to 12

UGG’s site offers the Classic Mini II in women’s sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, with no half sizes. A buyer who wears a 7.5 must pick a 7 or an 8. UGG doesn’t say which way to round, but its fit note does the deciding: a boot that stretches favours the smaller size.

The figures are from UGG’s women’s chart. It shows half sizes too, for the styles that come in them, and runs on to sizes 13, 14 and 15 for styles made that large.

Measure the longer foot, not the shoe you own

UGG’s guide asks for a measurement rather than a guess. Stand on a sheet of paper, heel and longest toe centred on a line, and mark the tip of the toe and the back of the heel. Do both feet, take the longer one, and find it on the chart. A 9.8-inch foot is a US 8.

Height changes how the boot fits, not its size

The Classic Ultra Mini sits below the ankle, the Classic Mini II at the ankle and the Classic Short II at mid-calf. All 3 are pull-on sheepskin boots on the same size chart. The taller the shaft, the more the calf matters: a pull-on shaft has no zip or lace to give.

The Tasman II slipper is the safer gift when the size is a guess

A gift buyer rarely gets to measure. The Tasman II is UGG’s suede slip-on with a sheepskin lining, a shoe rather than a boot. A slipper has no shaft to fit, so length, 9.5 inches heel to toe for a US 7, is the only thing a guess can get wrong. It is the wrong pick for a wet winter commute.

Children’s UGGs use a separate chart

UGG sizes children on its own Kids’ chart, split into Big Kids, for ages 4 to 10, and Toddlers, for ages 1 to 5. The Kids’ Classic Mini II follows it. A snug fit makes less sense for a growing foot, so a child between sizes is the one case for rounding up.

What the size chart cannot tell you

UGG’s chart gives length only. It gives no width for the standard Classics, though UGG lists separate Wide charts for women and men. For slush and rain, sheepskin is the wrong material altogether: Sorel against Columbia and waterproof against water-resistant boots cover the boots built for it.
