Amazon's 'Request Invitation': How High-Demand Toys Sell
On some high-demand items, Amazon swaps Add to Cart for Request Invitation. You ask once, Amazon emails an invitation if stock allows, and a timer decides how long you have to buy.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains what Amazon’s Request Invitation button does and how to buy through it, from Amazon’s own help page, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was requested or bought.
The button is a queue for items Amazon sells itself
Request Invitation appears on the product page of selected high-demand, low-supply items sold by Amazon, in place of the usual Add to Cart. Pressing it asks for the right to buy 1; it does not reserve or charge for anything.
Amazon grants invitations in line with the units it has in stock, and keeps granting them as more arrive. Its help page calls this an ongoing programme rather than a single draw.
1 request per item, and a timer once invited
Amazon allows 1 invitation request per item, though you can request invitations for several different items at once. If you are chosen, Amazon emails instructions for buying.
| Step | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Request | Press Request Invitation on the product page | Once only per item |
| 2. Wait | Amazon matches invitations to stock in hand | Watch the email linked to the account |
| 3. Invited | An email arrives; the product page shows a timer | Buy before the timer ends |
| 4. Timer expires | The invitation lapses | Request a new invitation |
| 5. Not invited | The request stays in line for more stock | Nothing; it carries over |
It began with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
The same mechanism now turns up on toys and collectibles. Amazon’s Top 100+ Toys list of 9 September 2026 told buyers of the Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box to look for the button.
A third-party seller’s listing is not part of it
The programme covers items sold by Amazon. On a busy listing, other sellers may still offer the same item through Add to Cart at a price of their own choosing. Check who the seller is on the product page before buying a scarce toy from a seller you do not know.
For what an Elite Trainer Box contains, see the Pokémon Elite Trainer Box, explained. For gifts that need no invitation, see Pokémon TCG gifts.
