The term was coined in 2005 by a retail trade association, describing a spike in online orders on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The cause was mundane: home broadband was slower and less common than the connection at an office desk.
That explanation stopped being true years ago and the category pattern it created did not. Retailers plan Friday around footfall and Monday around online stock, and buyers have learned to expect it.
The result is a real split in what gets discounted, sustained by habit and inventory planning rather than by anything about the internet.
What tends to move on which day
Friday favours large physical goods: televisions, major appliances, furniture, and the doorbuster stock a chain wants out of a warehouse before 31 December. These are heavy, hard to ship individually, and priced to bring people through a door.
Monday favours small and shippable: laptops, phone accessories, headphones, small kitchen electricals, clothing, beauty, subscriptions and anything delivered rather than carried.

Thanksgiving on 26 November to Cyber Monday on 30 November is 5 days, and most large retailers start earlier still, running continuous promotions from Monday 23 November. Waiting for a specific day rarely rewards you.
What changes across the window is availability rather than price. A popular item at its lowest price on Friday morning is frequently out of stock by Monday, and the Monday listing is then a different seller at a different price.
So the practical order is: decide the product before the window opens, set an alert, and buy when the price you already researched appears. Watching the calendar is the wrong variable.
The only check that matters
A percentage is meaningless without knowing what it is a percentage of. The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing at 16 CFR Part 233 address exactly this: a comparison against a former price is deceptive unless that price was genuine, offered openly and for a reasonably substantial period.
The check takes 30 seconds. Look at the price history for that specific listing over the previous 3 to 6 months. If the item sat at the “was” price for a fortnight in September and nowhere else, the discount is arithmetic rather than a saving.

What genuinely bottoms out in late November
Televisions and last-generation hardware do, because the product cycle forces it. A panel superseded in the spring reaches its real annual low in this window and does not go lower before it disappears.
