What Size TV for Your Room? A Seating Distance Chart
Measure from the sofa to the screen in inches. Multiply by 0.61 for the smallest size that looks right, or by 0.835 for THX's cinema fill. At 8 feet that is 59 to 80 inches, and 4K lets you sit closer.

This page turns 2 published viewing angles, SMPTE’s 30° and the 40° that THX’s own rule works out to, into a TV size for your seating distance, with 5 picks chosen as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Multiply your seating distance by 0.61 to 0.835
The right TV size is your seating distance in inches multiplied by 0.61 at the small end and 0.835 at the large end. Those 2 figures come from 2 viewing angles. SMPTE, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, recommends a screen filling at least 30° of your field of view for mixed use, RTINGS reports. A 40° fill is the cinema setting, and it is the angle THX’s own rule produces.
The arithmetic is short. A 16:9 screen is 0.872 times its diagonal wide. A screen that fills an angle at a distance is 2 × distance × tan(half the angle) wide. Divide that width by 0.872 and the diagonal is 0.615 × distance at 30°, and 0.835 × distance at 40°.
The distance chart: 8 feet suits 59 to 80 inches
At 8 feet from the screen, the range runs from 59 inches at 30° to 80 inches at 40°. The chart below applies both multipliers to common seating distances, rounded to the nearest inch, and names the TV sizes sold in that band. Measure from where your eyes will be, not from the front of the sofa.
| Eyes to screen | Smallest (30°) | Cinema (40°) | Common sizes in the range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 feet | 37” | 50” | 43, 50 |
| 6 feet | 44” | 60” | 50, 55 |
| 7 feet | 52” | 70” | 55, 65, 70 |
| 8 feet | 59” | 80” | 65, 70, 75 |
| 9 feet | 66” | 90” | 70, 75, 85 |
| 10 feet | 74” | 100” | 75, 85, 98 |
| 12 feet | 89” | 120” | 98, 100, 110 |
RTINGS treats its own 30° size as the smallest set it would recommend for a distance, not the perfect one. It also gives an outer limit: SMPTE’s 62° maximum, past which you turn your head to follow the picture. A 65-inch set reaches 62° at about 3 feet 11 inches. Use painter’s tape on the wall to mark out 2 sizes before choosing, RTINGS suggests.
At 6 to 7 feet, a 55-inch set fits
A 55-inch screen fills 30° at 7 feet 5 inches and 40° at 5 feet 6 inches, by RTINGS’ figures, so it suits a bedroom or a small den. The choice at that size is the room’s light more than the panel’s size.
For a room with a window facing the screen, the TCL QM6K rates 4.3 across 2,004 ratings. Owners praise its clarity and colors and say its brightness handles overhead light and sunlight. Reports split on power, with some saying it will not turn on.

At 8 to 9 feet, a 65 to 75-inch set fills the view
A 65-inch screen fills 30° at 8 feet 10 inches, so it looks right up to that distance, and a 70 or 75-inch set still sits inside the cinema angle at 9 feet. Past 9 feet, step up to 70 inches. A 65-inch screen is about 57 inches wide and 32 inches tall, before the bezel.
The Hisense 65-inch E7 Cinema Series rates 4.4 across 400 ratings, a newer listing with fewer ratings yet. It pairs Mini-LED with an anti-glare screen, the combination a living room with windows needs.

For more screen per dollar, the INSIGNIA 70-inch F50 carries 14,255 ratings at 4.3. A 70-inch screen fills 30° at 9 feet 6 inches. Owners rate the picture for the price, and crashes, flicker and a slow interface are the complaints that recur. It suits a basement or a second room better than the household’s main set.

4K lets you sit closer than old 1080p advice said
A 4K screen can sit closer, or be larger, than a 1080p one before you see its pixels, which is why THX loosens its rule for 4K sets. Eyes with 20/20 vision separate details about 1/60 of a degree apart, RTINGS notes. Closer than that limit, a 1080p screen starts to look like a screen door.
RTINGS puts numbers on it. On a 65-inch set, the eye resolves full 4K detail at about 4 feet, and anywhere from 4 to about 8.5 feet shows a difference over 1080p. On a 55-inch set beyond 7 feet, the gain from 4K mostly disappears. Since almost every set sold is 4K, the practical result is freedom to buy the larger size in the chart.
8K moves the point closer still, and pays off only on the largest screens, viewed from close. RTINGS’ advice is to skip it, because there is essentially no 8K content.
Hang the screen’s center near 42 inches
Put the center of the screen at seated eye level, which SANUS puts at about 42 inches from the floor, lower than most people expect. THX’s guidance is that your line of sight should land within 15° above or below the screen’s center. Mental Floss notes that looking up at a screen strains the eyes more than looking straight at it or down.
The 15° limit sets a ceiling you can compute. At 8 feet, 15° above a 42-inch eye line puts the screen’s center at about 68 inches. At 9 feet it is about 71 inches. A 65-inch set centered at 42 inches has its bottom edge about 26 inches from the floor, which clears most TV consoles.
Above a fireplace the center usually lands higher than that ceiling, and a tilting mount angles the screen down toward the sofa. The Mounting Dream tilting mount is sold for 42 to 86-inch TVs and rates 4.7 across 120,971 ratings. Owners rate it for value and for holding the TV close to the wall. TV wall mounts compared covers full-motion arms for corners and fixed mounts for flat walls.

The angles will not change; the sizes on sale will
The 30° and 40° guidance rests on field of view, not on panel technology, so it holds for any TV bought this year or next. What changes is what fits the top of the range. RTINGS notes that sets over 98 inches are becoming more accessible as their prices come down, and that they sit outside the usual size-to-distance curve.
