Cat Litter: Clumping, Dust and What Controls Odour

Odour in a litter box is ammonia, produced when bacteria break urea down over hours. Fragrance covers it and clump integrity prevents it, which is why the unscented litters frequently outperform the scented ones.

Litter box odour is ammonia. Urine is largely urea, which is close to odourless, and bacteria in the box convert it to ammonia over hours. Everything a litter does about smell is aimed at that reaction.

Clumping is odour control, not convenience

Sodium bentonite clay swells on contact with liquid and binds into a solid mass. That is what a clump is, and removing it removes the urea before the bacteria finish working on it.

So clump integrity is the odour specification. A clump that breaks apart on the scoop leaves saturated granules in the box, and those granules are where tomorrow’s ammonia comes from.

Fragrance does nothing to that reaction. It adds a second smell on top of the first, which is why the 2 unscented litters here hold their own against the scented ones and why many cats prefer them.

Type Mechanism Odour approach
Clumping clay Bentonite binds liquid Remove urea before it converts
Crystal silica Absorbs and evaporates Trap liquid, stir solids
Plant-based Absorbs, clumps variably Lighter, composts

Evidence45,329 ratings

45,329 ratings makes this the most-evidenced litter on the shelf, and 4.6 puts it top of the page on rating as well, which is a rare combination.

Multi-cat formulations use more sodium bentonite for harder clumps, because a box used by two cats gets saturated faster. That is the mechanical reason to buy multi-cat even for one heavy user.

Buy it if

  • You want the most-evidenced litter available
  • More than one cat using the same box

Don't buy it if

  • Fragrance in the house bothers you

Dust is a particle-size problem

Clay litter dust is fine clay particles thrown into the air when the bag is poured and when a cat digs. The fraction small enough to reach the lungs is what matters, and it is a function of how finely the clay was ground.

That is why the dust claims worth believing are the ones about granule size. Larger, more uniform granules produce less respirable dust, and the same change reduces tracking, because a big granule does not lodge between toes.

Pouring is the worst moment. Pour from 6 inches above the box rather than from waist height, and most of the airborne dust never happens.

8,460 ratings on a litter sold specifically on dust suppression, which is the right thing to sell a clay litter on.

The 37 lb bag is the practical catch. Buying in bulk lowers the cost per pound and it is a weight most people cannot pour carefully, and careless pouring is exactly what puts dust in the air.

Buy it if

  • Dust is the reason you are changing litter
  • You buy in bulk and have somewhere to store it

Don't buy it if

  • You cannot lift a 37 lb bag comfortably

Fresh Step Advanced Clean Paws Multi Cat Litter, 18.5 lb

15,249 ratings on a larger-granule formulation, and larger granules are the mechanical answer to both tracking and dust at once.

Tracking is the complaint people actually live with daily. A mat outside the box helps and granule size helps more, because it addresses why the litter sticks to a paw in the first place.

Buy it if

  • Tracking across hard floors is the daily annoyance
  • You want larger granules without changing type

Don't buy it if

  • Your cat dislikes coarse litter underfoot

Crystal and plant-based work differently

Silica crystal absorbs liquid into porous beads and lets the water evaporate, leaving the solids behind. There is no clump to remove, so the routine is scooping solids and stirring the beads, and the whole box is replaced when the beads saturate.

It is lighter to carry and lasts longer per bag. It also gives no daily signal that anything is wrong, which is the trade against clumping.

Plant-based litters use corn, wheat, walnut or recycled paper. They are lighter and some are compostable, and clumping ranges from good to poor depending on the base material.

None of the three is better as a class. The choice is what the cat will use, and a cat that rejects a litter will find somewhere else to go.

The crystal option

WatchColour change is a prompt, not a diagnosis

Silica crystal rather than clay, and the colour-change feature is worth understanding precisely: it responds to urine pH and other markers, and it is a prompt to call a vet rather than a diagnosis.

3,068 ratings, and it is the lightest option here to carry. For an older cat whose health you are watching, a daily visual cue has real value.

Buy it if

  • You want a lighter litter that lasts longer per bag
  • An older cat whose urine you want to watch

Don't buy it if

  • You prefer scooping clumps to stirring granules

Changing litter is a cat decision, not yours

Cats form substrate preferences young and a sudden switch is a common cause of a cat going outside the box.

Change gradually. Mix a quarter of the new litter into the old for a week, then half, then three-quarters. Four weeks is a sensible transition.

Depth matters as much as type. Most cats want 2 to 3 inches, deep enough to dig properly, and a shallow box is a box they will use less willingly.

Unscented, and well evidenced

Evidence29,993 ratings

29,993 ratings on an unscented clay litter, and unscented is the formulation this page argues for: clump integrity removes the urea, and fragrance only adds a second smell on top.

It is also the sensible starting point for a cat that has started refusing a box, because scent is one of the first things to eliminate when a cat changes its habits.

Buy it if

  • A cat that refuses scented litter
  • You would rather remove odour than mask it

Don't buy it if

  • You want the box to smell of something

4.2 is the lowest score here, on a litter sold on 30-plus days of odour control.

Read that claim against the mechanism. Any litter’s odour performance depends on the urea being removed before bacteria convert it, which means it depends on how often you scoop rather than on the bag. A long-life claim is a claim about the product doing your job for you.

Buy it if

  • You scoop daily and want a long-life claim tested

What actually keeps a box from smelling

Scoop daily, because the conversion to ammonia takes hours rather than days and no litter stops it once the urea stays in the box.

Then use one box per cat plus one, keep the litter 2 to 3 inches deep, and wash the box itself periodically, since plastic scratches and holds odour independently of what is in it. The machines that automate the scooping are covered in what goes wrong with automatic litter boxes, and the dust question applies to the room as much as the box, which air purifier CADR sets out.
