Urinary signs come before any litter change
A cat that strains in the box, passes blood, or makes repeated trips that produce little urine needs a vet the same day. A male cat doing this can have a urinary blockage, which is an emergency rather than a behaviour problem.
Pain also teaches avoidance. A cat with cystitis or arthritis can link the box itself with discomfort, and it keeps avoiding the box after the pain has gone. That is why Best Friends Animal Society and most shelter guidance put a vet exam first, before any of the changes below.
The most recent change is the likeliest cause
A cat that used its box for 2 years and stopped within a week of something new is usually reacting to the new thing. Owners in forums describe the same short list over and over: a different litter, a moved box, a new lid, a new pet, or a box scooped less often.
Undo the latest change first and give it about 5 to 7 days. Changing 3 things at once can fix the problem, but nobody learns which one caused it, and the next change can set it off again.
Box size is where most boxes fall short
AAFP and AAHA guidance puts the minimum box length at 1.5 times the cat’s body, measured from nose to the base of the tail. An 18-inch cat needs a box about 27 inches long, which is longer than most boxes sold as standard.
The count matters too. The common shelter rule is 1 box per cat plus 1 extra, in different rooms, so one cat cannot block another from every box at once. A household with 2 cats and 1 box is short by 2.
Lids divide cats. Published research has found no average preference between covered and open boxes, but a lid holds odour at nose height for the cat inside. If the trouble began when a hood went on, take it off before anything else.

A litter switch takes 1 to 4 weeks, not a day
Cats judge litter by texture and smell underfoot. Most published guidance favours an unscented, fine-grained clumping clay as the default, and it recommends a gradual switch: mix a little new litter into the old and raise the share week by week. A cat that has already refused a new litter needs the slow end of that range, about 4 weeks.

A vet or behaviourist is the next step after 2 weeks
If avoidance continues about 2 weeks after the latest change was reversed, the box was cleaned and the size rule was met, the cause is probably not the setup. That is the point to go back to a vet, and to ask about a referral to a veterinary behaviourist if the exam finds nothing.
