Balance Bike or Tricycle: Which Teaches Riding
A balance bike teaches the hard part of cycling, staying upright, and leaves pedalling for later. A tricycle teaches pedalling and never asks a child to balance. Which to buy depends on what comes next.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains what a balance bike and a tricycle each teach, then ranks 5 ride-ons by rating and by how many owners rated them on 5 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

A balance bike teaches balance; a tricycle teaches pedalling
Riding a bicycle takes 3 skills: balancing, steering and pedalling. A balance bike has 2 wheels and no pedals, so a child pushes along with their feet and learns the first 2. A tricycle stands up on its own, so a child learns to pedal and never has to balance.
Pedalling is the easy part to learn later. Balance is the part training wheels and trikes put off, so a child moving from a trike to a bike still has it all to learn.
Strider’s balance bike is the one to learn on
The Strider 12 Sport is a 12-inch bike with no pedals, sold for ages 1 to 4. Strider describes the sequence as stride, then lift the feet and glide, then move to a bigger bike when ready. Its 14x starts in balance mode and takes a pedal kit later.

Before 2, a 4-wheeled balance bike is a ride-on
The SEREED and Retrospec Cricket are both sold as baby balance bikes for 12 to 24 months, and both have 4 wheels. With 4 wheels they cannot tip like a 2-wheeled bike, so they teach steering and pushing more than true balance. The SEREED was 19th in Toys & Games Best Sellers on 5 October 2026.

A tricycle is for pedalling, from about 2½
The Radio Flyer Red Rider Trike is sold for ages 2½ to 5. A trike is the right gift for a child who wants to pedal and steer on a flat driveway, and it does that job for years.

The 5-in-1 tricycle tries to be both
The newyoo TR007 is sold for ages 1 to 3 and adjusts through 5 modes. Owners describe moving it from tricycle to a bicycle with training wheels. Training wheels, like a trike, keep the bike upright, so the child still has balance to learn when they come off.
