Why Christmas Lights Start House Fires, and How Not To
Lights and wiring are involved in 40% of US home Christmas tree fires. The fixes are specific: a UL or ETL mark, 3 incandescent strings at most, a watered tree and lights that switch themselves off.

Lights are involved in 40% of Christmas tree fires
US fire departments responded to an average of 143 home fires a year that started with a Christmas tree between 2020 and 2024. NFPA figures, as reported by Fire & Safety Journal Americas, put the toll at 7 deaths, 13 injuries and $15 million in direct property damage a year.
Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 40% of those fires, and lamps or bulbs were the source in 24%. Decorations other than trees started another 835 home fires a year. In 47% of them, the decoration was too close to a heat source.
A UL or ETL mark means the string was tested
Seasonal lighting sold in the US is tested to UL 588, the standard for holiday decorative products used for 90 days or less at up to 120 V. The CPSC advises buying only lights tested by a nationally recognised testing laboratory.
The 2 marks most often seen on a box are UL and ETL. ETL is Intertek’s mark, and Intertek is a testing laboratory recognised by OSHA, the US workplace safety agency. A string with neither mark has no independent evidence behind its wiring.
Never join more than 3 incandescent strings
The CPSC’s limit is 3 sets of incandescent lights connected end to end. Each incandescent set draws current through the first set’s wiring, and too many overload it.
LED strings change the arithmetic. Avista Utilities puts a 100-light incandescent mini string at 40 W and a 100-light LED string at 4.8 W. ENERGY STAR caps certified LED strings at 0.2 W per bulb and describes them as cool to the touch, which lowers the risk of heating a branch. Follow the maximum printed on the string’s own tag, whatever the bulb type. Some smart strings, such as those in Govee or Twinkly smart string lights, cannot be linked at all.
A dry tree is the fuel, so water it daily
NFPA’s guidance puts a tree at least 3 feet from any heat source, including fireplaces, radiators and candles. The CPSC adds a daily check of the tree’s water.
A stand’s reservoir size decides how often that check turns into a refill.

Outdoor lights need an outdoor rating and a GFCI outlet
The CPSC says lights used outside must be certified for outdoor use and plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter, a GFCI outlet. A GFCI cuts power when current leaks to ground, which is exactly what water in a connector causes.
Check the plug end as well as the string. Govee’s IP65 Christmas Lights 2 still needs its adapter in a watertight box, and BN-LINK asks for its outdoor timer to be mounted vertically, 2 ft above the ground.
Lights left on overnight are the easiest failure to remove
The CPSC’s long-standing advice is to switch holiday lights off at bedtime and when leaving the house. A timer takes the decision away.

What NFPA and CPSC figures cannot tell you
Neither NFPA’s 143 tree fires a year nor the CPSC’s 14,900 decorating injuries in the 2022–23 season say which brands of lights were involved, so no string can be called safer on fire statistics alone. The marks, the string limit and the timer are the controls a buyer has.
