How to Keep a Real Christmas Tree Fresh Through December

Cut half an inch off the trunk, get it into water within 6 to 8 hours, and never let the level drop below the base. The tree growers' rules, the myths they rule out, a stand that holds a gallon and an LED string.

This page sets out the National Christmas Tree Association’s rules for keeping a cut tree fresh, the myths they rule out, and the stand and lights those rules point to, chosen as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

A fresh, straight cut is what lets the trunk drink

The growers’ first rule is a new cut: saw a disk about 1/2 inch thick off the base, straight across the trunk, just before the tree goes in the stand. An angled or V-shaped cut makes the tree harder to hold upright and leaves less of the trunk in the water. Most species can go 6 to 8 hours after that cut and still take up water, so cut at home rather than at the lot if the drive is long.

Do not shave the sides of the trunk to make it fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the ones that carry water best.

The stand should hold 1 quart per inch of trunk

A stand needs about 1 quart of water for every inch of trunk diameter, by the association’s rule of thumb. A 4-inch trunk needs a gallon; a 6-inch trunk needs a gallon and a half. Devices that keep the water at a constant level are sold too, the association notes.

The Krinner Tree Genie holds 1 gallon with a level indicator, takes trees to 8 ft and trunks to 7 in, and rates 4.7 across 10,943 ratings. Owners single out the level indicator and the grip, which closes with a foot pedal and a single cable. The tension is the arithmetic: a gallon matches the rule for trunks up to about 4 inches, not the full 7 the stand will clamp.

Check the water every 24 hours, because the base can sit dry in a full stand

A stand can still hold water after the level has dropped below the cut end of the trunk, the association warns, and from then on the trunk is out of the water. Look at the trunk, not the bowl, every day. A tree that goes up on 28 November and comes down on 27 December needs 30 of those checks.

Fireplaces, vents and hot bulbs dry a tree fastest

Fireplaces, heaters, heat vents and direct sun all speed drying, so the association advises placing the tree away from them. A cooler room means the tree uses less water each day. Low-heat lights, such as miniature sets, dry it less, and every set should be checked for worn wiring before it goes on. The growers also ask for tree lights to be off whenever the house is empty or asleep.

The Govee Christmas Sparkle string puts 375 LEDs on 99 ft of wire and switches from a phone, a remote or Alexa, which makes the lights-off rule easy to keep. It rates 4.8 across 687 ratings. It is not water resistant, so it is for the indoor tree only; Govee against Twinkly sets it beside the other smart strings. Christmas lights and fire safety covers the lights themselves.

Take the tree down soon after Christmas

A tree dries further every week it stands, and a dry tree burns far faster than a watered one, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The growers’ advice is the same: if the tree has dried out, or Christmas has passed, take it out of the house. Never burn any part of it in a fireplace or wood stove.

For a tree that comes back every year instead, real against artificial trees weighs the two, and Christmas tree storage covers keeping an artificial one in shape.
