Toys for Tots 2026: What to Donate, and What Not To

Toys for Tots takes new, unwrapped toys, serves children up to 12 in most areas, and will not hand out realistic-looking weapons or gifts with food. 5 toys that fit the rules, from age 4 to the hardest age to buy for.

At a glance

The 4 rules every Toys for Tots box follows

The charity’s rules fit on a gift tag. Toys must be new, and they go in the box unwrapped. Most local campaigns serve children up to 12, though some communities stretch the limit. Realistic-looking weapons and gifts with food are not handed out, even if someone drops them in.

LEGO and Crayola suit the youngest children

Ages 4 to 7 are the easiest to buy for and the most common in the box. LEGO’s Classic Medium Creative Brick Box is 484 bricks in a storage tub, marked for ages 4 to 99. Owners call it good value and well organised, though the piece size draws mixed views. It has no instructions to lose and no single build to finish, which suits a child you will never meet.

A board game works for the whole family at once

A family that receives a game gets an evening, not just a toy. Hasbro Gaming’s Trouble is for 2 to 4 players aged 5 and up. Owners enjoy it across ages, though some find the pieces cheap. Board games also appear on the charity’s own list for older children.

3 things never reach a child: toy guns, food and wrapping

The commonest mistake is a well-meant one. A realistic-looking toy gun, a stocking with candy in it, or a beautifully wrapped box: none of the 3 will reach a child, because the charity will not distribute weapons or food and has to see what is inside. Leave the toy in its sealed shop packaging, unwrapped.

Drop it off before mid-December

Local campaigns run from October to mid or late December, and toys go out to families in the same weeks. No national 2026 end date is published, so check your area with the charity’s local campaign finder at toysfortots.org, by state and then county. Give early, and the toy reaches the sort.
