What each generation actually adds
Wi-Fi 5 uses the 5 GHz band and works fine. It is what most homes still run and what most of the devices in them expect.
Wi-Fi 6 adds efficiency rather than raw speed. Its real contribution is handling many devices at once without each one slowing the others, which is what a house with 30 connected things needs.
Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band. That band is clean and short-range, and it only helps if the device in your hand also supports 6E, which most do not.
Wi-Fi 7 widens channels to 320 MHz and lets a device use several bands simultaneously. It is aimed at multi-gigabit internet lines and at devices that do not exist in most homes yet.

The stated speed is a number nobody reaches
AX3000, AC1900, BE5000 and the rest are the sum of the theoretical maximums of every band added together. No single device connects to all bands at once, so the figure describes a condition that cannot occur.
Real throughput is a fraction of it, and it falls with distance, walls, interference and how many devices are talking.
The harder ceiling is your internet line. A 300 megabit connection is fully served by hardware from several generations ago, and no router makes a line faster than what arrives at the building.
Upgrade for coverage, for device count, or because the hardware has failed. Those are the three real reasons, and none of them is a generation number.

Mesh and a repeater are not the same thing
A repeater receives a signal and rebroadcasts it on the same radio, which halves throughput at each hop and creates a second network name to fight with.
A mesh system uses nodes that coordinate as one network, hand devices between themselves, and carry traffic back to the router over a dedicated path called backhaul.
Backhaul is the part that decides whether a mesh works. A tri-band system reserves a radio for node-to-node traffic. A dual-band system shares the same radio with your devices, which costs throughput at every hop.
Wired backhaul beats both. If any ethernet exists between floors, using it removes the wireless hop entirely and turns a 3-node mesh into 3 independent access points.

Placement decides more than hardware
Nodes want to be roughly halfway between the router and the dead spot, not in the dead spot. A node placed where the signal is already poor has poor signal to relay.
Height and obstruction matter. A node on a shelf clears furniture; a node in a media cabinet behind a television is shielded by the metal in front of it.
Two nodes placed well beat three placed badly, and most mesh apps will tell you the backhaul quality between nodes. That reading is the single most useful diagnostic in the box.

Find out what your internet line actually delivers, because that is the ceiling. Then count the devices in the house, since device count is what Wi-Fi 6 genuinely improves.
