Four numbers decide whether a pair of earbuds is any good, and three of them are printed. The fourth is the one that ends their life, and no listing states it.

The codec is the only audio number that matters
Bluetooth compresses audio before it leaves the phone, and the codec decides how much is thrown away. Both devices have to support the same one, so the phone in your pocket constrains the choice before the earbuds do.

Buying LDAC earbuds to pair with an iPhone gets you AAC, because the iPhone does not speak LDAC. That mismatch is how people end up paying for an audio specification they will never use.
A listing that names no codec at all supports SBC and probably AAC. That is not a scandal at the volume end, and it is worth knowing before paying for “Hi-Fi” in a title.

Driver diameter tells you almost nothing
Earbud listings quote driver size in millimetres, usually 6 to 13 mm, and larger sounds better in the way larger numbers always do.
It does not follow. Output depends on the driver material, the magnet, the acoustic chamber behind it and the tuning, and a well-tuned 8 mm driver beats a poorly tuned 13 mm one routinely. Nothing on a listing lets you compare across those.
What does matter is the seal. An earbud that does not seal loses bass by physics, no matter what is driving it, which is why fit complaints and sound complaints are so often the same complaint.

IP ratings are two digits, and only one of them is about water
An IP rating under IEC 60529 has a solids digit and a liquids digit. IPX4 means untested for dust and rated for splashing from any direction.

An X is not a zero. It means the manufacturer did not test that axis, so IPX7 earbuds may still be vulnerable to fine dust. For running and the gym, IPX4 is genuinely enough.
The number nobody prints
Earbuds have small lithium-polymer cells, and small cells hold few charge cycles. A pair charged daily is through several hundred cycles in 2 years, and capacity falls the whole way.
That is why the stated “60 hours with the case” is a figure about a new product. It is also why so many owner reports on so many products in this category split on durability while agreeing on everything else — the earbuds worked, and then the battery stopped holding.
No listing states cell capacity or expected cycles, and nothing in the category is user-serviceable. Treat earbuds as a 2-to-3-year purchase and buy accordingly.

Earbud specifications to check before buying
Confirm the codec your phone actually supports, then ignore driver diameter entirely. Read the IP rating as two digits and take IPX4 as sufficient unless you swim.
