Mattress Firmness Is a Number, Not an Adjective

Medium firm is a marketing word. Indentation load deflection is a measured figure, and foam density in pounds per cubic foot predicts how long the mattress holds its shape. Almost no listing gives either.

Every mattress on this page is sold with a word: soft, medium, medium firm. None publishes the measured figure behind it, which is why owner reports on firmness split on almost every listing here.

ILD is the measurement the word replaces

Indentation load deflection is measured by pressing a 50 square inch disc into a foam sample until it compresses to 25% of its thickness, and recording the pounds of force required.

That gives a number. Roughly, an ILD of 10 to 14 is a soft comfort layer, 15 to 20 is medium, 21 to 30 is firm, and support cores run higher still.

The figure is standard in the foam trade and almost never appears on a consumer listing. What appears instead is a word chosen by a marketing department, which is why 2 mattresses labelled medium firm can feel a grade apart.

Layer Typical ILD Job
Comfort layer 10 to 16 Pressure relief at shoulder and hip
Transition layer 16 to 24 Stops you sinking through
Support core 30 and up Holds the spine aligned

WatchDurability and odour reports split

88,579 ratings makes this the most-evidenced mattress on the shelf, and it is sold as medium firm. Owners split between finding it neither too soft nor too firm and finding it way too firm.

That disagreement across tens of thousands of reports is not a manufacturing inconsistency. It is what happens when one word has to describe a property that varies with body weight, sleeping position and what you slept on before.

Buy it if

  • You want the deepest evidence base available
  • A spare room or a first mattress

Don't buy it if

  • It is the bed you sleep on for 10 years

Firmness and support are not the same property

Firmness is how the surface feels in the first few seconds. It is a comfort sensation and it is what people buy on.

Support is whether the mattress holds your spine in a neutral line all night. It comes from the core, and a soft-feeling mattress with a strong core can support better than a firm-feeling one with a weak one.

That distinction explains the most common complaint in this category: a mattress that felt right in the shop and produced back pain by week 3. The surface was correct and the core was not, and 4 of the 5 mattresses here carry split back-support reports.

A useful home test is the hand test. Lie on your back and slide a hand into the small of your back. If it slides through easily the mattress is too firm for you; if you cannot get it in at all, you are sinking and the support is insufficient.

WatchBack support reports split

28,395 ratings, and back-support reports divide between owners reporting no more back pain and owners reporting severe back pain. Both groups are describing the same mattress accurately.

That is the firmness-against-support distinction arriving as data. Body weight is the hidden variable: the same foam that supports a 140-pound sleeper is bottomed out by a 240-pound one.

Buy it if

  • You want gel foam at a deep evidence base
  • You sleep on your side

Don't buy it if

  • You have a diagnosed back problem

Density predicts how long it lasts

Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot and it describes how much material is in the foam rather than how firm it feels. The two are independent: a dense foam can be soft and a light foam can be firm.

Density is the figure that predicts service life. Under about 3 pounds per cubic foot, memory foam softens and develops body impressions within a few years. Between 3 and 5 is the durable range, and above 5 is dense, heavy and slow to respond.

Polyfoam in a support core follows the same logic at different numbers, and 1.8 pounds per cubic foot is the common threshold below which a core degrades quickly.

None of the mattresses here publishes a density. That absence is the finding, and it is why durability reports split on almost every one of them.

Firmness splits, back pain reports split, and durability splits between owners saying it holds up and owners saying it does not. With no published density, those durability reports are the only evidence available on the question this section is about.

Height buys comfort layer, not support

A 14-inch mattress is not more supportive than a 12-inch one. The extra 2 inches almost always go into comfort layers, which changes how deeply you sink rather than how well the core holds you.

That is worth having if you are heavier, because more comfort layer means you reach the firm core less abruptly. It is wasted if you are light, because you never compress far enough to notice.

Height also has practical consequences. Deep mattresses need deep-pocket fitted sheets, and a 14-inch mattress on a tall bed frame can put the sleeping surface uncomfortably high.

WatchFirmness reports split

14 inches is the thickest here, and owners describe it cradling the body, which is exactly what additional comfort layer produces.

Cooling gel is the other claim, and owners do report not overheating. Memory foam retains heat by design because it responds to body warmth, so gel and open-cell structures are addressing a real weakness rather than an invented one.

Buy it if

  • You are heavier and bottom out on 10-inch foam
  • You overheat on standard memory foam

Don't buy it if

  • You want a firm surface

Owners praiseSupport, no harsh smell

12,314 ratings, and owners praise the support specifically rather than the softness, along with easy unboxing and no harsh smell.

Off-gassing is a genuine complaint across boxed foam, caused by volatile compounds released after decompression. Air it for 48 hours in a ventilated room before sleeping on it, whatever the listing says.

Buy it if

  • Off-gassing has put you off boxed mattresses
  • You want support reports rather than softness ones

Don't buy it if

  • You want a firm mattress and will not compromise

What to ask before buying

Ask for the ILD and the density in pounds per cubic foot. Most sellers will not have them, and the ones that do are telling you something real.

Then use the trial period as the actual test, and give it 3 weeks rather than 3 nights, because the body adapts and first impressions of firmness are unreliable. What goes on top of it is in the bed sheet shortlist, and the same preference for a measured figure over a marketing word runs through sofa frame joinery and thread count.
