Telling a Ten-Year Sofa From a Two-Year One
Three things decide how long a sofa lasts, and none of them are visible once the upholstery is on. Frame timber, how the corners are joined, and the density of the foam.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
A sofa fails in one of three places: the frame racks, the springs sag, or the foam collapses. All three are decided before the upholstery goes on, and none of them can be seen afterwards.
Kiln-dried hardwood is the only frame worth paying for
Kiln drying takes the moisture content of the timber down to roughly 6 to 8%. Wood at that level has stopped moving, so the joints stay tight instead of loosening as the frame dries out in a heated room.
Air-dried or green timber sits nearer 15 to 20% and keeps shrinking after it is built. That is what produces the sofa that creaks after 2 winters.
Beneath hardwood, the ladder runs down through plywood, then oriented strand board, then particleboard. Particleboard does not hold a screw under repeated load — the fixing chews out its own hole and the frame starts to move.
Joinery decides whether it racks
A sofa frame is a set of rectangles, and rectangles want to become parallelograms. What stops that is how the 8 corners of the seat box are made.
Mortise and tenon or dowelled joints, glued and then screwed, with a corner block — a triangular timber piece glued and screwed across the corner — is the construction that lasts. The corner block is the giveaway, and it is the first thing a retailer will show you if it is there.
Staples and glue alone is the construction that does not. Staples are a manufacturing convenience for holding fabric, not a structural fixing.
Springs: eight-way hand-tied against sinuous
Eight-way hand-tied means each coil is tied to its neighbours in 8 directions by hand. It is the traditional system, it distributes load well, and the labour is why it appears on expensive sofas.
Sinuous springs — S-shaped steel wire running front to back — are the mainstream alternative and are perfectly good when the gauge is heavy enough and the spacing is close enough. Gauge and spacing are what to ask about, not the name of the system.
Webbing alone, with no springs, belongs on light-framed and mid-century designs where it is the intended structure. On a deep-seated sofa it is a cost saving.
Foam density is the number that predicts the sag
Polyurethane foam is specified in pounds per cubic foot, and density is not the same as firmness — it measures how much material is in the foam rather than how hard it feels.
| Density | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 1.8 lb/ft³ | Collapses within a couple of years |
| 1.8 to 2.4 lb/ft³ | The mainstream band. Holds several years |
| 2.5 lb/ft³ and up | High resilience. Holds a decade |
A soft high-density foam outlasts a firm low-density one, every time. If a listing gives a firmness description and no density figure, it has told you the part that costs nothing to say.
The awkward finding about buying a sofa online
Rank this category by rating and review count and the most-evidenced sofa on Amazon carries 946 ratings. A sheet set on the same site carries 454,804.
That gap is the story. It means owner reports cannot do the work here that they do in bedding or luggage, because there are not enough of them and almost none run long enough to catch a frame failure at year 3.
It also means the specification matters more, not less — and almost no marketplace listing states the frame timber, the joinery or the foam density. What follows are the best-evidenced options available, read with that limitation stated plainly.

| Owners report | Assembly clear, looks as pictured |
|---|---|
| Cushions | Soft enough for long sitting |
| Not stated | Frame timber, foam density |
946 ratings is the largest evidence base this category offers, and it is worth reading for what it does cover: assembly, appearance and immediate comfort. Owners report clear instructions, a piece that looks as photographed, and cushions soft enough to sit on for a long stretch.
What no volume of first-year reviews can tell you is whether the frame is kiln-dried or whether the foam is above 1.8 lb/ft³, and the listing states neither. Buy it as a 3-year sofa for a small room and it is a reasonable purchase. Buy it as a decade piece and you are guessing.

Hanherry 89-inch Sofa
Owners report solid wooden legs and firm cushions that hold, which is more construction detail than most listings in this category offer at all.

| Owners report | Sturdy build, strong wooden legs |
|---|---|
| Assembly | One person, no tools |
| Not stated | Frame timber, foam density |
The owner reports here are unusually specific about construction, which is rare in this category: sturdy build, strong wooden legs, firm-but-soft cushions, and assembly one person can complete without tools.
Legs are not the frame. A solid leg tells you nothing about whether the corners are blocked or the rails are particleboard, and the listing does not say. Read the reports as good evidence about the first year and no evidence at all about the fifth.
Buy it if
- You are furnishing a studio or small room
- You need it assembled without help
Don't buy it if
- You need to know what the frame is made of
Welzona 51-inch Teddy Loveseat
Zippered cushion covers that come off to be washed, which is the one construction detail on this page that genuinely extends a sofa's life.

| Covers | Zippered, removable |
|---|---|
| Owners report | Sturdy, not wobbly |
| Not stated | Frame timber, foam density |
Zippered, removable covers are the single detail on this page that genuinely extends a sofa’s life, because the fabric is what usually looks finished long before the frame is. Owners confirm they come off easily and wash.
Sturdiness reports are positive, with owners noting it does not wobble — a reasonable proxy for the corners being fixed rather than stapled, though it is a proxy rather than a specification.
Buy it if
- You want covers you can actually clean
- Two adults, small space
Don't buy it if
- You want a full-size sofa
The four questions to ask before buying
Ask the seller: what is the frame timber and is it kiln-dried, how are the corners joined, what is the seat foam density in lb per cubic foot, and are the covers removable.
A shop that can answer all 4 is selling a sofa built to be answered about. A listing that answers none of them is selling a photograph, and the honest advice for a piece you intend to keep is to buy it somewhere you can sit on it and ask.
