Thread Count Is Mostly Marketing
A 1000-thread-count sheet is usually a 250-thread-count sheet counted four times. The number that survives scrutiny is not thread count at all — it is staple length, and it is rarely printed.

Thread count is threads per square inch, warp and weft added together. The standard method is ASTM D3775, and it counts single threads. The number on the packet frequently does not.
Where a 1000-count sheet comes from
Take a yarn spun from 4 thinner strands twisted together. Count the strands rather than the yarn, and a fabric with 250 real threads per inch is sold as 1000.
The multiplication is the entire trick. It does not make the sheet denser, softer or stronger — it makes the same cloth carry a bigger number, and the plies are thinner than a single yarn of equivalent count would be.
Above roughly 400, a genuine single-ply count starts to be physically awkward: the threads have to be so fine that the fabric loses strength. So a 1000 on a mid-priced sheet is a ply count, and an 800 usually is too.
What the number is worth below 400
Between 200 and 400 the count does describe something. A 200-count percale is noticeably more open than a 400, and you can feel the difference.
Past that it stops tracking anything you would notice. A denser weave is not automatically better — it is warmer, heavier and slower to dry, which is the opposite of what most people buying “luxury” sheets say they want.
Staple length is the figure that matters
Cotton fibre length decides how soft and how durable the finished yarn is. Short fibres leave more ends sticking out of the yarn, and those ends are what pill.
Three grades matter. Upland is standard cotton, around 1 inch, and it makes up most of the world crop. Pima runs about 1.4 inches. Egyptian — grown in Egypt, which is the part the label often omits — is similar to pima at its best.
Long-staple cotton produces a smoother yarn with fewer exposed ends, so it feels better at 300 threads than short-staple does at 800. That is the trade the thread-count number is designed to distract from.

Percale and sateen are structures, not qualities
Percale is a plain weave: one thread over, one under. It produces a matte, crisp fabric that breathes, and it wrinkles, because there is nothing in the structure to hide a crease.
Sateen floats 4 threads over 1 before going under. More surface yarn means more sheen, more drape and a softer hand. It also means more exposed thread to snag, and a warmer sheet.
Neither is better. Percale for a hot sleeper, sateen for someone who wants the fabric to feel expensive, and the choice has nothing to do with the count printed beside it.

The owner reports read like a description of percale itself. It stays cool, it does not slip off the mattress, the colour holds without running or fading — and it wrinkles, which several owners mention and which is structural rather than a defect.
That is the honest bargain of a plain weave. Air moves through it because the threads interlace at every crossing, and the same interlacing means a crease has nowhere to hide. Take it out of the dryer early or accept the texture.

The volume end of this category is not cotton
Denier and GSM are the measurements for polyester microfibre, because the fabric is frequently knitted rather than woven and has no threads per inch to count. Anything under 1 denier per filament qualifies as micro, and a thread count printed on such a set is decoration.
That is worth knowing because microfibre dominates the volume end of this category. It wicks rather than breathes, which is why owner reports on temperature split so consistently — it moves moisture well and traps heat.

The complaint worth reading is that several owners describe the fabric as thin enough to see through, alongside reports of it tearing. No thread count would have told you that, which is the point of this page. Fabric weight in GSM would have, and almost nobody prints it.

What to read on the packet instead
Look for the fibre first — long-staple, pima or a named cotton, rather than “Egyptian quality”, which is a phrase that means nothing. Then the weave, percale or sateen. Then a count between 200 and 400.
If a set states its weight in GSM, that tells you more than the count does. The same logic runs through the duvet comparison, where fill power is the figure everybody quotes and fill weight is the one that decides the outcome.
What the sale price tells you
