The 7 smoke alarms here are ranked by rating, then by how many owners rated them, read on 20 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Each listing’s sensor, power source and interconnection sits beside what owners report about batteries, false alarms and noise. Nothing here was handled or tested.

A typical 2-storey home needs 5 or 6 alarms
NFPA’s guidance puts a smoke alarm in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, on every level of the home and in the basement. For 3 bedrooms upstairs, that is 3 bedroom alarms, 1 in the upstairs hall, 1 on the ground floor and 1 in the basement: 6 in all. That count is why the packs on this page come in 3, 6 and 12, and why a single alarm in the hallway falls short.
US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November 2026, and that weekend is a sensible day to do the count and press every test button. NFPA asks for a test at least once a month.
X-Sense’s sealed battery ends the 9-volt chirp
The X-Sense SD2J0AX is a photoelectric alarm with a sealed 10-year battery, listed to UL 217, and comes in a 3-pack. It rates 4.6 across 4,097 ratings, the deepest owner record on this page. Owners call it well made, easy to install, loud and worth the price. The complaint that recurs is the battery: most owners are content, but some report a unit giving up within months of its 10-year claim. It does not talk to other alarms, so a fire in the basement sounds only in the basement.

X-Sense SC06-W sets off every alarm at once
NFPA calls interconnected alarms best, because when one sounds, they all sound. The X-Sense SC06-W does that wirelessly across a 6-pack, detects carbon monoxide as well as smoke, and runs on sealed 10-year batteries with no wiring. It rates 4.6 across 3,269 ratings. Owners report easy installation, simple pairing and a design that blends into a ceiling. Durability is the recurring worry, with some units failing after about a year.

Don't buy it if
- Long service, as some owners report units failing after a year

First Alert SM310 carries both sensor types
The First Alert SM310 puts a photoelectric and an ionization sensor in one alarm, on a 10-year battery. It rates 4.5 across 169 ratings, a newer listing with fewer reviews yet. Owners like the easy install and report few false alarms. The price is what divides them, and at 6 alarms a home it adds up. Some also find the unit hard to take off its base. Why the 2 sensor types behave differently is in the Kidde hardwired profile.

The 12-pack covers a large house on one network
The X-Sense SD19-W is a wirelessly interconnected smoke alarm on a 10-year battery, sold as a 12-pack, and the listing allows up to 18 on one network. It rates 4.4 across 894 ratings. Owners like the easy setup and that every alarm sounds together. Battery life divides them, as with the SD2J0AX, and some find the alarm tone grating. It detects smoke only, so carbon monoxide needs separate alarms.

Kidde 20SDR fills one gap on AA batteries
The Kidde 20SDR is a single smoke alarm on replaceable AA batteries, with LED status lights and an 85 dB horn, per the listing. It rates 4.3 across 763 ratings, and the listing published no summary of what owners report. It suits one extra room, such as a converted office now used as a bedroom. Kidde with Ring sends the alarm to your phone
The Kidde smart alarm is hardwired with an AA backup, interconnects wirelessly and sends alerts to the Ring app. It rates 4.2 across 234 ratings. Owners report easy setup and like the app. The recurring complaint is Wi-Fi: some say alarms stop connecting, and opinion on whether it is worth the money is split. The alarm still sounds in the house without Wi-Fi; the phone alert is the part that can drop out.

Kidde 30CUA10 replaces an old hardwired alarm
Many homes already have hardwired, interconnected alarms on the ceiling, and those take a hardwired replacement. The Kidde 30CUA10 detects smoke and carbon monoxide, has a 10-year backup battery and supports wired interconnect. It rates 4.0 across 1,332 ratings, the lowest here. Owners find it an easy swap and value the 2 alerts in one. The complaint is reliability, with some reporting units failing within 6 months, and the alarm’s noise.

What did not make the list
The Siterwell smoke alarm rates 4.4 across 678 ratings, above 3 alarms here, and is sold on a 10-year product life. Owners report its battery needing replacement every year, false alarms after a few months and a weak adhesive mount, which defeats the reason to buy a long-life alarm. A dry Christmas tree is one of the fires these alarms exist for, and how to keep a real tree fresh covers the water. For the extinguisher to keep beside the stove, see fire blankets and extinguishers.
