Which tool for which fire
A fire blanket and a kitchen extinguisher are both stove-side tools, and an ABC extinguisher belongs on every floor. Consumer Reports recommends an ABC unit certified by UL Solutions, CSA, FM Approvals or ETL, one for each floor of the home.

Fire blankets have the deepest records and no US standard
The best-reviewed product on this page is a fire blanket, and the US has no UL standard for blankets. The European standard is EN 1869, so a listing that says “certified” without naming the standard gives you nothing to check.

General-use extinguishers: read the rating on the label
An extinguisher’s UL rating is its capacity, and the numbers are comparable across brands. The number before A is multiplied by 1.25 to give the equivalent in gallons of water, the number before B is the square feet of burning liquid it should put out, and C means it is safe on live wiring.
