Clean air delivery rate is measured under AHAM AC-1 in a sealed chamber, and it is the only figure in this category that compares between brands. Multiply a smoke CADR by about 1.55 to get the area a machine cleans at roughly 5 air changes an hour.
Manufacturers usually quote area at 1 or 2 air changes instead, which inflates the number by 3 to 5 times. That describes a machine which technically moves a room’s air rather than one that keeps it clean, and CADR is the only number works the conversion through.
