The Air Purifier Shortlist

Coverage claims on these eight machines run to 4,200 square feet, and the arithmetic that matters cuts most of them to roughly a third. Sorted by the room a machine can genuinely keep clean.

Seven of these 8 machines publish a coverage area and only 1 publishes the tested figure behind it. That imbalance is the whole reason this shortlist is ordered the way it is.

What size air purifier for a room, in square feet

Clean air delivery rate is measured under AHAM AC-1 in a sealed chamber, and it is the only figure in this category that compares between brands. Multiply a smoke CADR by about 1.55 to get the area a machine cleans at roughly 5 air changes an hour.

Manufacturers usually quote area at 1 or 2 air changes instead, which inflates the number by 3 to 5 times. That describes a machine which technically moves a room’s air rather than one that keeps it clean, and CADR is the only number works the conversion through.

Stated coverage Realistic at 5 air changes
1,000 sq ft Roughly 300 sq ft
1,733 sq ft Roughly 500 sq ft
1,875 sq ft Roughly 560 sq ft
4,200 sq ft Roughly 448 sq ft, per its own CADR

Read that last row carefully. The one machine here that publishes its CADR shows exactly how far apart the two numbers are, on its own listing.

At 5 ACHAbout 448 sq ft

289 CADR printed on a listing is the transparency this whole page argues for, and it is rare enough to be the reason this machine is here.

Run that figure through the two-thirds rule and it covers roughly 448 square feet properly, against a stated 4,200. Both numbers are defensible and they answer different questions, which is the point.

Buy it if

  • You want the tested figure printed
  • A large open-plan space on a low setting

Don't buy it if

  • You are buying the 4,200 figure literally

The best air purifier for a bedroom is a quiet one

Every CADR figure is measured at maximum fan speed, commonly 50 to 60 decibels. Nobody sleeps beside a machine at maximum, so the real clean air delivery in a bedroom is whatever it produces on a setting you can tolerate.

That argues for buying a machine rated well beyond your room and running it low. It delivers the air changes quietly, which is the setting it will spend its life on.

A purifier switched off at bedtime has a CADR of zero. The noise figure deserves as much attention as the coverage claim.

Best evidence at a high score

WatchValue opinions split

4.7 across 24,827 ratings is the strongest combination of score and evidence on the page, and owners report ultra-quiet operation alongside genuine reductions in dust and pet dander.

One owner reports no longer needing allergy medication, which is a single report rather than a finding, and it is the outcome people buy this category for. Value opinions split, as they do on every machine here above the entry tier.

Buy it if

  • One machine for a large living room
  • You want score and evidence together

Don't buy it if

  • You take the stated square footage literally

WatchCoverage assumes low air changes

14,968 ratings and owners praising quiet running and pet-hair handling, which is the daily-life half of the specification.

The stated 1,875 square feet is a low-air-change figure. Treat this as an excellent machine for a bedroom or a living room run continuously, rather than one unit for an open-plan floor.

Buy it if

  • Pets are the reason you are buying
  • It runs in a bedroom overnight

Don't buy it if

  • You expect it to cover a whole floor

HEPA is a class, and carbon is a separate stage

True HEPA is defined: at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micrometres in a single pass. That size is used because it is the hardest to catch, so performance above and below it is better rather than worse.

HEPA-type and HEPA-like are not that class. They are constructions with no threshold behind them, and a listing using either is telling you the filter did not qualify.

Activated carbon handles gases and odours and is not part of the HEPA claim. It also saturates faster than the particle filter, which makes it a running cost rather than a feature.

32,188 ratings makes this the most-evidenced purifier on the page, from a brand with a long record of CADR-certified models, which is the paper trail worth having here.

Owners praise the auto mode and the odour removal specifically, and odour is the carbon stage rather than the HEPA one. Budget for both filters across a year, not just the HEPA.

  • You want the deepest evidence base available
  • Odours are part of the problem

WatchValue opinions split

19,538 ratings, and owners single out quiet running and filters that are simple to install and change. Filter changes are the running cost people forget until the first one.

The stated 2,000 square feet follows the same low-air-change convention as everything else. In one room, run continuously, it does the job the number was never describing.

Buy it if

  • You want a deep evidence base at a lower price
  • Filter changes should be simple

Don't buy it if

  • You expect whole-floor coverage

The best air purifier for smoke and for a living room

BLUEAIR Blue Pure 311i Max Smart Air Purifier

DesignBlends with décor, per owners
WatchReliability reports split

Owners report immediate improvement in air quality and effective smoke removal, which matters because smoke uses the smallest particles and is the hardest of the 3 CADR tests.

They also praise the appearance, which sounds trivial and is not — a purifier that looks acceptable in a living room is a purifier that stays plugged in. Reliability reports split, so use the return window.

Buy it if

  • Smoke or wildfire season is the problem
  • The machine has to look acceptable in a living room

Don't buy it if

  • Price is the deciding factor

The 1,000 square foot claim converts to roughly a bedroom at a real air-change rate, which is exactly the room it should be bought for. At that job it is one of the best-evidenced options on the page.

Buy it if

  • One machine for a bedroom, run continuously
  • Budget matters and evidence still does

  • A large open-plan room is the target

Rank hereHighest rated of 8
Watch465 ratings only

4.8 is the best score in this comparison and 465 ratings is the smallest sample, and both belong in the same sentence. A high average over a few hundred reports is a weaker signal than a slightly lower one over thirty thousand.

Sealed multi-stage filtration is the substantive claim and it addresses a real weakness: a machine that leaks air around its filter delivers less than its filter class suggests. Worth the money if that is the problem you are solving.

Buy it if

  • Filtration quality matters more than price
  • You can accept a small sample

Don't buy it if

  • You want thousands of reports behind it

Before you buy

Find the smoke CADR if it exists, multiply by 1.55, and compare that to the room rather than to the listing. Where no CADR is published at all, treat the square footage as unverifiable.

Then price a year of filters and check the decibel figure on the setting you would sleep through. Humidifiers get bought in the same fortnight and solve a different problem, which where the white dust comes from covers, and the full arithmetic is in CADR is the only number.
