Why an Air Purifier Smells, and What It Means
A purifier that smells is usually telling you which stage has failed. Sour and musty is a damp pre-filter, a chemical or stale note is saturated carbon, and a hot plastic smell on a new unit is neither.

Stop here if it smells like burning
A hot plastic, electrical or burning smell is not a filter problem. Switch the unit off at the wall, unplug it, and do not run it again.
That smell comes from the motor or the wiring, and it is a manufacturer or electrician matter rather than a maintenance one. Nothing in the rest of this page applies to it.
The 1 exception is a brand-new unit, which can give off a faint plastic smell for the first 2 or 3 days as manufacturing residues off-gas. That fades. A burning smell on a unit that has run for months does not.
Musty or sour: the pre-filter is damp
A pre-filter traps large particles, and in a humid room it holds moisture with them. Mould and bacteria grow in that layer, and the unit then blows the result into the room.
The signature is a smell that is worse when the purifier runs than when it is off. That is the diagnostic: a passive room smell is the room, and a smell that arrives with the fan is the filter.
A washable pre-filter can be vacuumed or rinsed and dried completely before it goes back. A pre-filter bonded to the HEPA layer cannot, because a wet HEPA medium is ruined and grows the same organisms in a place you cannot reach.
Check the humidity in the room while you are there. Above about 60% relative humidity, the problem returns whatever you do to the filter.
Chemical or stale: the carbon has saturated
Activated carbon does not destroy odour molecules. It adsorbs them across an internal surface area of roughly 1,000 square metres per gram, and that surface fills.
A saturated carbon stage stops removing smells first, and then starts releasing them back as temperature and humidity shift. Owners describe this as the purifier making the room smell worse than no purifier, and that description is accurate.
Carbon saturates faster than HEPA clogs, which is why the smell arrives before any drop in dust performance. In a kitchen or a smoking household it can be months rather than the year the manual quotes.
There is no way to recharge it at home. Baking a carbon filter is advice that appears in forums, and domestic ovens do not reach the temperature required, so it drives absorbed compounds off into the kitchen instead.

A returning smell right after a filter change
2 things cause this and they are easy to separate. A protective plastic wrapper left on a new filter blocks the airflow and traps the smell in the housing, and it is the single most common report after a change.
The other is a housing that was never cleaned. Residue on the fan blades and the inner casing carries its own smell, and a new filter blows air across it before it reaches the room. Wipe the interior with a dry cloth at every filter change.
What actually resets the filter clock
The indicator light on most units counts running hours rather than measuring saturation. It is a timer, not a sensor.
That matters in both directions. A unit run on high in a kitchen exhausts its carbon well before the light comes on. A unit run 2 hours a day in a clean bedroom may be fine past it.
Reset the counter manually after every change, because the timer does not detect that a new filter went in.

Pre-filter, every 2 to 4 weeks. Vacuum it, and rinse only if the maker’s own instructions call it washable, then dry it completely.
Carbon, every 6 to 12 months, and toward 6 in a kitchen or with pets. Smell is the real indicator here rather than the light.
HEPA, every 12 months. It clogs rather than smelling, and the sign is reduced airflow at the same fan speed.
