Humidifiers, and Where the White Dust Comes From

The white film on the furniture is the minerals dissolved in your tap water, aerosolised and dropped around the room. Only 1 of the 3 humidifier mechanisms does it, and the fix is a different machine.

Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. An ultrasonic humidifier shatters that water into a mist without removing anything from it, so the minerals leave the tank, ride the mist and land on every surface in the room.

The quick list

Every pick, in order. Jump to the full test on any of them.

Three mechanisms, and only one makes dust

Ultrasonic units vibrate a metal disc at high frequency and throw droplets off the surface. The mist is visible, the machine is near-silent, and whatever was dissolved in the water goes into the air with it.

Evaporative units draw air through a wet wick with a fan. Water leaves as vapour and the minerals stay behind in the filter, so no dust is produced at all. The fan is audible and the wick is a consumable.

Steam or warm mist units boil the water at 100 degrees Celsius. Minerals stay in the reservoir as scale, so no dust, and the boiling element is the part that fails. Of the 5 machines here, 4 are ultrasonic and 1 is evaporative.

WatchFilter life and cost raised

This is the evaporative answer, and it is on this page because the mechanism cannot aerosolise minerals. If white dust is the reason you are reading, that fact settles the purchase.

What owners raise instead is the filter — how long it lasts and what it costs, which is the trade evaporative asks for. 3,697 ratings is a thinner base than the ultrasonic units above it, and the category has largely moved to mist for exactly that reason.

Buy it if

  • Hard tap water and dust is the problem
  • You want humidity that self-limits

Don't buy it if

  • You do not want a consumable filter

Why distilled water is the only complete fix

Filters marketed as demineralisation cartridges reduce the mineral load rather than removing it. They exhaust, and a cartridge past its life is a cartridge that has stopped doing anything.

Distilled water has had the minerals taken out before it reaches the tank, so an ultrasonic unit running on it produces no dust at all. That is the complete fix and it costs money every week.

Softened water is not a substitute. Ion exchange trades calcium for sodium, and the sodium aerosolises just as readily. A 4-litre tank refilled daily is roughly 28 litres of distilled water a week.

WatchDurability reports split

63,462 ratings makes this the most-evidenced humidifier here, and what owners lead with is that it runs almost silently. That is the ultrasonic mechanism’s genuine advantage over a fan.

Durability reports split, which is the pattern across this whole category. Buy it for the quiet, and decide before you buy whether you will run distilled water through it.

Buy it if

  • It runs beside a bed all night
  • You want the deepest evidence base available

Don't buy it if

  • You will not buy distilled water

The band to hold is 30 to 50%

Below about 30% relative humidity, static builds, timber shrinks and mucous membranes dry out. Above about 50%, condensation appears on cold glass and mould has what it needs.

So the target is a band rather than a maximum, and a humidistat is what keeps a machine inside it. A unit running open-loop in a small bedroom will overshoot 60% overnight and put water on the windows.

Buy a separate hygrometer regardless. The sensor inside a humidifier sits in its own damp microclimate and reads high, which is why 2 machines in the same room can disagree by 10 points.

WatchNoise and durability split

The highest-rated unit here at 4.5, and the reports are unusually specific: owners describe it holding a small room between 45 and 50%, which is the top of the band this section recommends.

Noise and durability both split, with some owners reporting units that stopped within a month. Filter-free is the selling point and it is also the reason the minerals have nowhere to go but the room.

Buy it if

  • You want no filter to replace
  • A small bedroom is the room

Don't buy it if

  • Your tap water is hard and dust would bother you

Tank size is a refill schedule, not a capacity

Output is measured in litres per day and the tank only decides how often you refill. A 6-litre tank on a machine producing 3 litres a day is a 2-day tank, and the same tank on a machine at maximum output is an overnight one.

Bigger tanks are harder to lift to a sink and harder to clean, and cleaning is the maintenance that actually matters. Any standing reservoir grows biofilm within days, which the mist then carries into the room.

Empty it daily, dry it, and descale weekly. That routine matters more than any specification on the box.

Levoit Humidifier, 6.2L Tank, Smart App

38,570 ratings on a large tank with a humidistat in the app, and owner reports on whether it raises humidity at all split hard.

WatchHumidity output reports split

6.2 litres and an app with a humidistat, which is the closed-loop control the section above argues for. 38,570 ratings behind it.

Owner reports on whether it actually raises humidity split hard, and that is usually a room-size mismatch rather than a fault. A machine sized for a large room in a leaky one with the door open will never reach a target.

Buy it if

  • A large room and you want to refill less often
  • You want a reading rather than a guess

Don't buy it if

  • A small bedroom, where the tank is wasted

WatchFailures at about 60 days

30 hours a tank at a stated 26 dB is a full night with margin, and quiet is the specification people actually live with.

Owners report units stopping at around 60 days, which is the same durability complaint that runs through every ultrasonic listing here. Buy where returns are easy and test it inside the return window.

Buy it if

  • You want a full night and then some per fill
  • Quiet matters more than capacity

Don't buy it if

  • A 2-month failure would be unacceptable

What to decide before buying

Decide the mechanism first, because it settles the dust question and nothing else does. Hard water plus an ultrasonic unit means distilled water forever or a film on the furniture.

Then buy a hygrometer and hold 30 to 50%. Humidifiers and air purifiers get bought in the same fortnight and solve different problems, which the CADR explainer sets out. The machines that clean rather than humidify are in the air purifier shortlist, and the same gap between a tested figure and a marketed one runs through robot vacuum suction.
