Which blocks more malware? Neither, measurably
AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives both test consumer suites against live malware on a published methodology, and the major products cluster between 99.5% and 100% against widespread threats. They have for years.
A fraction of a percentage point separates the field, and that includes Microsoft Defender, the scanner already built into Windows, which sits in the same test rounds rather than below them. What antivirus stops and what it does not works through the two figures the labs publish.
So detection is not the deciding factor between these two brands. Anyone telling you one catches meaningfully more is describing a rounding difference.
Are Norton and McAfee the same company? No
Norton belongs to Gen Digital, the company formerly called Symantec and then NortonLifeLock, which also owns Avast, AVG and Avira. McAfee was founded by John McAfee in 1987, owned by Intel from 2011, and taken private in 2022 by an investor group led by Advent International. The 2 brands compete; neither is a relabel of the other.
Which is better for multiple devices?
Device count is what actually separates these editions, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

Count the devices in the house before comparing anything else, including phones and tablets, since both brands count those against the licence.
A 10-device licence covering a household is the only configuration where either product is obviously good value, and Norton is the one that offers it at that count here.
Which slows your computer down more?
Both labs publish a performance score alongside the 99.5% detection figures, measuring the slowdown a suite imposes on ordinary tasks. It predicts whether you will still be running the software in a year.
Owner reports on Norton mention low system overhead directly, which is unusual specificity for a consumer review and worth weighing. McAfee reports concentrate on interruptions rather than on speed.

The complaint is the software’s own behaviour: owners describe constant prompts as annoying. A security product that trains you to dismiss its notifications has quietly undermined the thing you bought it for.

McAfee reports divide too, and the language is different: owners describe quick installs across several laptops alongside reports of download problems.

That pattern is worth stating plainly: across this whole category, owners argue about setup and billing and almost never about detection. The labs and the reviews agree, from opposite directions.

Both auto-renew by default, and the renewal is a complaint owners of both brands raise again and again.
The mechanism is the same in both cases. A first term is sold at an introductory rate, the card on file is charged at a standard rate afterwards, and owners describe not being told what that rate would be.
Norton’s listing states auto-renewal in the product title, which is more disclosure than most. Owners still name it as the thing they dislike, which suggests the disclosure is not doing the work.
Two defences, and they cost nothing. Buy a boxed key rather than a subscription download where the option exists, so the decision returns to you next year. And diarise the renewal date the day you install.
