Auto shut-off is a timer, not a temperature check
Auto shut-off switches the blanket off when a set time runs out, whatever temperature it has reached. A Bedsure heated throw manual hosted on Amazon describes 2 separate systems: a timer, and a chip with a temperature sensor that cuts power if the throw overheats.
That distinction changes how to use one. A timer protects against forgetting. The overheat sensor protects against a fault. Neither makes it safe to fall asleep under a throw whose manual says not to.
Shut-off times run from 1 to 10 hours by model

Both Sunbeam throws switch off after 4 hours and cannot be set longer. That ends a film or a nap without anyone deciding, which is the point of a timer.

Buy a throw whose listing names ETL or UL certification
Sunbeam’s throws list ETL or cETLus certification, and Bedsure’s preheat throw lists ETL and FCC. The mark is the one piece of safety testing a buyer can check before ordering.
The US standard behind it is UL 964, for electrically heated bedding, and its scope names throw blankets alongside blankets, mattress pads and foot warmers on 110 to 120 V. Its full requirements sit in the paid standard, so what it tests is not public. A heated throw with no certification mark on its listing gives no evidence of independent testing.
The 2026 recalls were about the wire, not the timer
On 17 September 2026 the CPSC announced a recall of about 195,000 JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads, sold on Amazon from September 2022 to July 2026. The internal heating wires can overheat, and the notice lists 577 reports of smoking, melting or burning and 53 burn injuries.
On 16 July 2026 the CPSC warned consumers to stop using about 700 Melinora heated blankets sold on Amazon, whose heating wires can melt through the fabric. The firm did not agree to a recall. A timer cannot prevent either fault, because both happen while the blanket is switched on.
Folding, bunching and tucking are the use rules that matter
The Bedsure manual lists the rules that recur across heated bedding. Never tuck the throw in, never pin it, and avoid sharp folds or bunching while it is on.
It also says not to use the throw on an infant, or on anyone asleep, unconscious, diabetic or with poor circulation. Those people may not feel a throw that is too hot.
