57 inches to the centre, not the top
The number refers to the vertical centre of the picture, not its top edge and not the hook. Almost every mistake in domestic hanging comes from measuring to the wrong point.
Applied consistently across a wall, the centre line also gives a room its order. Pictures of different sizes hung to one shared centre read as a group; the same pictures aligned along their top edges read as a shelf.
There are 2 reasons to break it. A room where people are mostly seated, such as a dining room, drops to about 54 inches. A wall under a 12-foot ceiling can lift a little, though less than instinct suggests.
The formula that puts the hook in the right place
The hook does not go on the centre line. The wire lifts when it is pulled taut, so the hook sits above the centre line by an amount you can calculate exactly.
- Halve the picture’s height. A 24-inch frame gives 12.
- Add that to 57. That is where the top of the frame will be, at 69 inches.
- Pull the wire taut toward the top of the frame and measure from the wire to the frame top. Call it the drop, commonly 2 to 3 inches.
- Subtract the drop from the top figure. A 3-inch drop puts the hook at 66 inches.
