Glazing is where the light gets in
Standard glass passes a large majority of the ultraviolet in daylight. It is clear, it is cheap, and it does essentially nothing to slow fading. All 6 frames on this page ship with it or with plain acrylic.
Standard acrylic, sold as plexiglass, blocks somewhat more ultraviolet than plain glass as a property of the plastic. It is lighter, it does not shatter, and it scratches if you wipe it with anything abrasive.
UV-filtering glazing, in glass or acrylic, carries a coating or an additive that removes the great majority of ultraviolet across the damaging range. Museum glazing adds an anti-reflective coating on top, which is what makes a print look unglazed.

The mount is the part that attacks from behind
Ordinary mount board is wood pulp. Wood pulp contains lignin, which breaks down over years into acidic compounds, and those compounds migrate into whatever the board is touching.
That is what produces the brown line just inside the mount opening, sometimes called mat burn, and the general yellowing of a print stored against cardboard. It is chemistry rather than dirt and it cannot be cleaned off.
Acid-free means the board was buffered to a neutral pH. Lignin-free means the lignin was removed rather than neutralised, which is the stronger claim. Cotton rag or museum board is made without lignin in the first place.
Buy the mount separately if the frame’s is unlabelled. Of the 6 frames here, 1 ships with a mount at all. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in framing, and it is invisible.

The print must not touch the glass
Glazing is colder than the room. Moisture condenses on the inside surface, and paper pressed flat against it absorbs that moisture, cockles, and eventually sticks.
Once a print has adhered to glass, separating it is a conservator’s job and often an unsuccessful one. Photographs with gelatin emulsions are the worst affected.
A mount solves it. Standard 4-ply board is about 1.5 mm thick, which holds the paper clear and lets air move. Where the design has no mount, spacers sit hidden under the rebate and do the same job.
That gap is also why a frame sized larger than the print, matted down, is the standard arrangement rather than a decorative preference.

Glass or acrylic is a room decision
Choose acrylic where weight or breakage matters: above a bed, in a child’s room, on a plasterboard wall with modest fixings, or anywhere the frame is large. A 24x36 sheet of glass is genuinely dangerous.
Choose glass where optics matter and the frame is small enough to hang safely. Glass does not scratch from ordinary dusting and it stays optically flat over decades, where thin acrylic can bow.
Acrylic also carries a static charge, which is a real problem with charcoal, pastel and anything loose on the surface. It lifts the medium off the paper.
