LEGO sorts its sets into 6 age bands, from 1½+ to 18+
LEGO’s own shop sorts every set into 1½+, 4+, 6+, 9+, 13+ and 18+, and the band is printed on the box. Each number marks the youngest builder a set is designed for, not a ceiling: the LEGO Classic box says 4 to 99. The bands that matter most to a gift buyer are the 2 ends, where the brick itself changes and where the set stops being a toy.
DUPLO covers 1½ to about 4, with a brick made for small hands
DUPLO is LEGO’s line of large, durable bricks made for little hands, sold from 1½ years up, and LEGO hands over to the smaller brick at 4. From 6+ to 13+, the number is LEGO’s estimate, not a rule
The 6+, 9+ and 13+ bands use the same small brick as 4+. Above age 3, the number on a toy box is the maker’s estimate of when a child can build a set alone, so a confident 5-year-old may manage a 6+ set with an adult beside them. 18+ sets are display models for adults, not harder toys
The 18+ band marks sets made for adults, and their listings sell them as display pieces as much as builds. The LEGO Botanicals Tiny Plants 10329 rates 4.9 across 6,314 ratings. Owners describe several small builds, each with its own booklet, and a finished set that stays out as a display.
