The number before “in-1” counts the jobs it does
A 7-in-1 does 7 jobs, a 9-in-1 does 9 and a 10-in-1 does 10. The Instant Pot Duo 6-quart is the 7-in-1 baseline: pressure cook, slow cook, rice, steam, sauté, yogurt and warm, with sterilise added to the list. Every other model on this page is measured against it.

Pro means sous vide, and little else most cooks need
The Instant Pot Pro lists 10 functions, adding sous vide and grains to the Duo’s set. Sous vide cooks sealed food in water held at an exact temperature, so a steak comes out the same doneness edge to edge. If you will never cook that way, the Pro’s extra jobs are ones you pay for and skip. It is also sold in 8 quarts.

Rio Wide is built for searing before you pressure cook
A 7.5-quart base wide enough to brown a roast in one go is what sets this model apart. The Rio Wide 7.5-quart has a wide base its listing says is built for searing, plus the WhisperQuiet release. The trade is counter space: wide is wide.

Mini means 3 or 4 quarts, for 1 or 2 people
A 3-quart pot holds half of a 6-quart, which is plenty for rice and sides but not a whole chicken. The Rio Mini 4-quart adds a quart over the Duo Mini 3-quart, and that extra quart is the difference between a pot of chilli for 2 with leftovers and one without. Both keep 7 functions.

What lost: the 8-quart Duo for most households
The 8-quart Duo is the same 7-in-1 in a bigger pot. Unless you cook for 6 or batch for the freezer, 6 quarts is easier to store. Unbranded 12-in-1 and 16-in-1 multi-cookers sat beside the Instant Pots in the search; they are left out because their function counts don’t map to Instant’s names.
