How to Clean a Travel Mug: Stains, Smell and the Gasket
Rinse it the day you use it and store it with the lid off. For coffee stains and smell, 2 denture tablets overnight or white vinegar. Pull the gasket out. Check the maker before the dishwasher, and never use bleach.

Rinse it the same day and store it with the lid off
Contigo’s first rule costs nothing: rinse after every use, and store the mug with the lid removed in a cool, dry place. Zojirushi also says to rinse after each use, and adds that the stopper should be unscrewed and rinsed under running water each time. A lid screwed onto a damp mug traps the moisture that residue and smell need.
Contigo’s routine for a mug that already smells runs in 3 steps. Run hot soapy water into the body until no bubbles appear, then run it through the lid’s spout and vent hole. Rinse both with hot water and leave them apart to dry completely.
For coffee stains and smell, soak overnight with 2 denture tablets
Brown film inside a steel mug is almost always coffee or tea build-up, Thermos says, not damage to the steel. Its fix for stubborn stains and odours is coffee pot cleaner or denture tablets. Each maker publishes its own method, and none of them needs anything harsher than vinegar.
| Maker | Its method for stains and smell |
|---|---|
| Thermos | 2 denture tablets in hot water, soaked overnight, then washed and rinsed. Lemon juice for odours |
| YETI | 1 YETI cleaning tablet for 5 minutes, 2 for drinkware over 30 oz. Do not shake it |
| Contigo | Several ounces of lemon juice or white vinegar, shaken for 30 seconds. Baking soda also named |
| Stanley | For narrow flasks: ¼ cup of uncooked rice and 3 oz of white vinegar, shaken for 1 minute |
| Zojirushi | Mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then a thorough rinse |
The Thermos Stainless King rates 4.5 across 11,522 ratings and states up to 7 hours hot. Its lid carries a hook for a tea bag, so it is the mug here most likely to need the tablet treatment.

| Hot | Up to 7 hours |
|---|---|
| Lid | Drinklock, leak-proof when closed |
Owners say it keeps drinks hot all day. The lid has a hook for a tea bag or an infuser. Durability and leaks draw mixed reports, with some owners saying it dents easily.

- Tea drinkers
Don't buy it if
- A bag, if you forget to close it
Pull the gasket out, because residue hides under it
The rubber ring in the lid is the one part a rinse cannot reach. YETI’s instructions for the MagSlider lid are to pinch the gasket with 2 fingers until it lifts from its groove, pop the magnetic slider off, and wash every piece. Every part must be dry before it goes back on.
Contigo’s method for discolouration or residue on a lid is to take it apart, soak the parts in hot, mild soapy water, and scrub them with nylon pads and bristle brushes. Then shake off the water and leave the parts to dry overnight, until visibly dry, before reassembly. None of the 5 makers’ pages read gives a fixed schedule for removing the gasket; they say rinse after every use and take the lid apart for a deep clean.
The YETI Rambler 20 oz rates 4.8 across 148,098 ratings. Owners find it easy to clean and say it survives the dishwasher. The complaint that recurs is leaking, because the MagSlider is a sipping lid rather than a sealed one.

- Anyone who wants the whole thing in the dishwasher
Don't buy it if
- A bag, as several owners report leaks
Check the maker before the dishwasher, because the answers differ
Dishwasher safety runs from every part to no part, depending on the maker. YETI says every inch of its Rambler drinkware is dishwasher safe. Zojirushi says its vacuum mugs and all their components are not, and should be washed by hand with mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge.
| Maker | Lid | Body |
|---|---|---|
| YETI Rambler | Dishwasher, utensil compartment for the small parts | Dishwasher |
| Contigo travel mugs | Top rack | By hand, to protect the insulation and finish |
| Thermos | Most are top-rack safe | Hand washing recommended for the finish |
| Stanley | Many are dishwasher safe; check the base | Hand wash narrow openings or paint |
| Zojirushi | By hand | By hand |
Contigo’s reason is worth knowing: high heat and strong detergent can affect paint, seals and lid mechanisms over time, and reduce how well an insulated product performs. The Contigo West Loop 3.0 follows that split, lid on the top rack and body by hand. It rates 4.6 across 58,865 ratings and states up to 11 hours hot.

| Hot | Up to 11 hours |
|---|---|
| Lid | Autoseal, locks between sips |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body by hand |
Owners call it fantastic, keeping coffee hot all day, and say the leak-proof claim holds. It is easy to clean; the lid is top-rack dishwasher safe and the body is washed by hand. Some owners say the top lasts years, others that it broke within months.
Buy it if
- A commute with the mug in a backpack
Don't buy it if
- Anyone who wants the body in the dishwasher too
For a mug that goes in whole, the Stanley Transit Flip Top listing, read on 4 October 2026, calls it fully dishwasher safe. It rates 4.6 across 7,029 ratings and states up to 6 hours hot.

|---|---|
| Lid | Flip-top that locks shut |
| Dishwasher | Fully, per its listing |
Owners love how it holds temperature and that the closed lid does not spill. The 16 oz size fits cup holders and bags. At 6 hours hot, it is a morning mug rather than an all-day one.
Buy it if
- A commuter who wants the whole mug in the dishwasher
Don't buy it if
- Coffee that must stay hot past lunch
Never use bleach, and do not soak a vacuum mug
Bleach is the one cleaner 3 of the 5 makers rule out by name. Thermos says never to use bleach or any cleaner containing it. Contigo says bleach and other toxic cleaners are not safe. Stanley says bleach or chlorine could degrade the sealing parts, which costs you leaks and heat.
Zojirushi adds 2 more rules for its mugs. Do not soak the vacuum bottle in water, and do not put it in the dishwasher. It also advises against filling its vacuum mugs with dairy, because milk can curdle and leave a smell behind. Stanley’s last rule is no steel wool: a dishrag, a soft sponge or a small brush with gentle dish soap.
The Zojirushi SM-SA48 rates 4.7 across 32,824 ratings. Owners like that it comes apart to clean, which matters for a mug that is washed by hand only.
Zojirushi SM-SA48 Stainless Mug, 16 oz
A flip-lid mug owners like because it comes apart to clean, and Zojirushi says to wash every part by hand.

| Size | 16 oz |
|---|---|
| Lid | Flip-top with latch |
| Dishwasher | No part, by Zojirushi's guidance |
Owners find it well designed, say it keeps drinks hot and cold, and like that it comes apart to clean. They report it does not spill or leak. The recurring note is size: some find it smaller than they expected.
Buy it if
- Anyone happy to rinse and hand wash a mug that comes apart
Don't buy it if
- A household that runs everything through the dishwasher
The easiest mug to keep clean is the one that comes apart
A lid that separates into pieces is the one that can be cleaned under the gasket, whatever the dishwasher rule. The YETI and the Stanley Transit go in the dishwasher whole; the Zojirushi comes apart for hand washing. Travel mugs compared ranks all 8 mugs on heat and lids, and insulated tumblers compared covers the 20 to 40 oz cups with straws.
