How to Wash a Puffer Jacket Without Flattening It

A down puffer goes in a front-loader with a down soap, gets a second rinse, then dries on low heat with tennis balls. A synthetic one follows its care label. The 5 washes and proofers worth buying for each.

This page sets out how to wash a puffer at home, from Patagonia’s published care guide, and lists the 5 washes and proofers that go with it, ranked as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or washed.

At a glance

Check the fill first: down and synthetic wash differently

The label decides the method. A down puffer is filled with duck or goose feathers, and down loses its loft and its warmth while it is wet, so the drying is the hard part. A synthetic puffer, such as The North Face Junction with 100g of synthetic insulation, has no feathers to clump: follow its care label. The puffer jacket guide lists which of its 6 jackets are down and which are synthetic, and the winter clothing guide covers what to layer under one.

Use a down soap and a front-loading washer

Patagonia’s guide names 3 things: a down soap, a front-loading washer and a dryer with reliably low heat. Regular detergent can strip the natural oils from down and may not rinse out cleanly. Nikwax Down Wash is the cleaner the guide names. A top-loader on the gentle cycle will do for a light jacket, but a thick parka needs a front-loader, because its baffles tear easily under an agitator.

Measure the soap, then rinse a second time

More soap does not mean cleaner down, because residue stops the down from lofting fully. Pre-treat dirty cuffs and the collar with a stain remover, run the permanent press cycle with the amount of soap the bottle states, then run 1 more cycle with no soap at all. For a jacket with a season of grime on it, Patagonia suggests stopping the washer mid-wash and letting it soak for about an hour.

Dry it on low heat with tennis balls, and take your time

Drying a down jacket is slow, and high heat can ruin it. Use low heat on a home dryer, and check a laundromat dryer carefully, since many run hot even on low. A few clean tennis balls break up the clumps; the Grangers Down Wash Kit comes with 3 dryer balls for the same job. Pull the jacket out now and then and pull the clumps apart by hand, because a whole baffle’s down can shrink to a lump the size of a marble.

With no safe dryer, lay the jacket flat on a towel somewhere warm and out of direct sun, and flip it now and then. Patagonia puts air drying at a couple of days to more than a week, and calls it the safest way. Down feels dry long before it is, so never pack it away damp: that is how mildew starts.

Restore the water repellency if it soaks up drizzle

Some down jackets carry a durable water repellent finish, which holds off a light drizzle for about an hour before water soaks in. When a washed jacket starts darkening in light rain instead of beading, the finish has worn. Down Proof is Nikwax’s wash-in treatment that restores it.

Skip the dry cleaner: 1 sent a down sleeping bag back flat

Patagonia recommends against dry cleaning any of its products, because the chemicals are harsh. Its author once had a sleeping bag dry-cleaned by a shop that claimed to clean down all the time, and it came back “clean as a whistle and flat as a pancake”. Washing it yourself, slowly, is the safer route.
