Two numbers, and only one is printed
Fill power runs from about 550 to about 900 in consumer products. Higher means each ounce traps more air, so the same warmth arrives in a lighter, more compressible package.
Fill weight is how many ounces of down are actually in the jacket. It is what decides how warm the garment is.
A 650-fill jacket carrying 6 ounces of down is warmer than an 800-fill jacket carrying 3. That comparison is the entire argument, and only 1 of those figures appears on a listing.
So fill power is a warmth-per-gram-carried number. It matters enormously if you are carrying the jacket up a mountain and it matters much less if you are walking to a car.

Down collapses when it gets wet
Down insulates by trapping air in the structure of the cluster. Wet it and the clusters mat together, the air escapes, and the insulation approaches zero.
Synthetic insulation is made of fibres that hold their loft when damp. It is heavier and bulkier for the same warmth when dry, and it keeps working when wet.
