What Is Fill Power? Down Jacket Numbers Explained
Fill power measures how much loft an ounce of down produces. Fill weight measures how many ounces are in the jacket, and it is the figure that decides warmth. Almost no listing prints the second one.

What fill power means, and the number not printed
Fill power runs from about 550 to about 900 in consumer products. Higher means each ounce traps more air, so the same warmth arrives in a lighter, more compressible package.
Fill weight is how many ounces of down are actually in the jacket. It is what decides how warm the garment is.
A 650-fill jacket carrying 6 ounces of down is warmer than an 800-fill jacket carrying 3. That comparison is the entire argument, and only 1 of those figures appears on a listing.
So fill power is a warmth-per-gram-carried number. It matters enormously if you are carrying the jacket up a mountain and it matters much less if you are walking to a car.

Rab states 800 fill power and a total weight of 477 g in size M, which is more than any other jacket here publishes. Its US product page still gives no fill weight, so even the specialist leaves you to ask for the number that decides warmth.
It is also stitch-through, with micro and midi baffles, which the section on baffles below calls a limitation in real cold. Rab pitches it for winter walking, climbing and shoulder-season belays rather than standing still in deep cold.

Down collapses when it gets wet
Down insulates by trapping air in the structure of the cluster. Wet it and the clusters mat together, the air escapes, and the insulation approaches zero.
Synthetic insulation is made of fibres that hold their loft when damp. It is heavier and bulkier for the same warmth when dry, and it keeps working when wet.
That is the real decision. Cold and dry favours down; cold and wet, or any situation where the jacket might not dry, favours synthetic.
Hydrophobic down treatments help and do not solve it. They delay saturation rather than preventing it, and the treatment wears off with washing. Only 2 of the 4 jackets here use down at all.
