The Data — Clothing

Fabric Weight Tells You More Than Fibre Does

Two shirts can both say 100% cotton and behave completely differently. Weight in grams per square metre decides drape, opacity and whether the shirt survives 50 washes, and it is printed only by makers confident in it.

Fibre content tells you what the yarn is made of. Fabric weight tells you how much of it is there, and that second figure decides almost everything you notice about a garment.

The weights worth knowing

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square metre, or in ounces per square yard in the United States. One ounce per square yard is roughly 34 gsm.

Garment Light Mid Heavy
T-shirt Under 150 gsm 160 to 190 200 and up
Sweatshirt Under 280 gsm 300 to 380 400 and up
Shirting Under 110 gsm 120 to 140 150 and up
Denim Under 11 oz 12 to 14 oz 15 oz and up

Around 180 gsm is the practical floor for a t-shirt that holds its shape. Below about 150 the shirt is visibly thin, twists in the wash and shows what is underneath.

Heavier is not simply better. A 220 gsm tee is hot in July, and a heavy shirt in a light cut hangs like cardboard.

The highest-rated garment here, from a workwear brand where fabric weight is the entire product rather than a detail.

22,209 ratings, and what owners buy it for is exactly what weight delivers: a shirt that keeps its shape through years of washing rather than growing a wavy hem after 10.

Buy it if

  • You want a tee that holds its shape for years
  • Opacity matters to you

Don't buy it if

  • You want something light for summer

Weight predicts opacity, drape and life

Opacity is the most immediate. Below about 150 gsm a white tee is translucent under office lighting, and no amount of fibre quality fixes it.

Drape is how the cloth falls. Heavy fabric holds a shape and hangs straight; light fabric clings and follows the body. Neither is better and they suit different cuts.

Life follows weight closely. A heavier knit has more fibre to lose before holes appear and resists the stretching that turns a neckline slack.

That is why weight is the single most useful number on a garment listing, and why the makers who achieve it print it.

Oversized Cotton T-Shirt, Vintage Washed, Unisex

1,300 ratings on an oversized cut, where weight matters more than usual because a loose shirt has nothing to hold its shape but the cloth.

WatchWashed finishes start softer

An oversized cut makes weight matter more rather than less. A loose shirt has no body contact to give it shape, so the cloth itself has to hold the silhouette.

1,300 ratings. A vintage-washed finish starts softer, which is pleasant on day one and means some of the fabric’s structure has already been laundered out of it.

Buy it if

  • You want a boxy silhouette that holds
  • You prefer a pre-softened hand

Don't buy it if

  • You want a fitted shape

Ring-spun and open-end at the same weight

Two fabrics can weigh the same and feel completely different, and the difference is how the yarn was spun.

Open-end yarn is faster and cheaper to produce, with a coarser surface. It is what most inexpensive blanks use and it pills sooner.

Ring-spun yarn twists the fibres more tightly, producing a finer, stronger, softer thread. Combed ring-spun removes the shorter fibres first, which is what makes a shirt smooth rather than slightly hairy.

So the full specification is weight plus spin. A 180 gsm combed ring-spun tee outperforms a 200 gsm open-end one on feel and on pilling.

Staple length sits behind both, which is the same argument thread count makes about sheets.

WatchNo stated weight

99,396 ratings makes this the most-evidenced garment anywhere on this site, and the weight appears as the word heavy rather than as a number.

That is the pattern across this whole page: 3 of these 5 listings sell on weight and none of them states one. The word is doing the work the figure should.

Buy it if

  • You want the deepest evidence base available
  • Blank tees for printing or layering

Don't buy it if

  • You want a stated gsm to compare

Shrinkage is a weight question too

Cotton shrinks along the knit, mostly in length, and it happens in the first wash or two. A heavier fabric has more to give and can lose more.

The label tells you what was done about it. Pre-shrunk means the fabric was relaxed before cutting. Garment-dyed or washed means the finished item went through a process that removed most of the shrinkage and softened it.

Where neither appears, expect a cotton tee to lose up to an inch in length. Buying a size up is the usual workaround and it produces a shirt that is wide as well as short.

WatchNo stated weight

58,942 ratings on a shirt whose name is its specification, which is a fair summary of how this category communicates.

Opacity and structure are what people buy it for, and both follow directly from weight. On a tee worn on its own rather than as a base layer, that is the property that matters most.

Buy it if

  • You want opacity and structure
  • A tee worn on its own rather than under something

Don't buy it if

  • You run warm in summer

Heavyweight Boxy Oversized 100% Cotton Tee

Watch253 ratings

253 ratings on a tee sold on being thick, and thickness is precisely the claim a gsm figure would make checkable.

Structure in the shoulders is the real appeal of a heavy boxy cut. Without a stated weight, the owner reports about how it holds up after washing are the only evidence available.

Buy it if

  • Structure in the shoulders is the point

Don't buy it if

  • You want a deep evidence base

What to look for

Find a gsm or ounce figure on the listing. Its absence is not disqualifying and it is informative, because the makers hitting a good number tend to print it.

Then check for ring-spun or combed, and for pre-shrunk. The same preference for the measured figure over the marketing word runs through genuine leather and thread count, and what the fill in a winter coat actually buys is in fill power is not warmth.
