Do Ant Bait Stations Work? Why Slow Is the Point
Ant baits work by being slow: workers carry the poison home and feed it to the queen. What UC entomologists advise on placing them, why a spray undoes them, and the 5 baits owners rate.

This page explains how ant baits kill a colony, where University of California entomologists say to put them, and why a spray undoes them. It ranks 5 baits by rating and by how many owners rated them on 8 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

A bait works because it kills slowly, over 5 to 10 days
An ant bait is an insecticide mixed with food that foraging workers want, sugar, protein or oil. In Pest Note 7411, UC Statewide IPM calls baits the only type of insecticide it recommends in most situations, and says they are safer and more effective than sprays when used properly.
TERRO’s liquid borax stations rate highest
Borate baits are the most effective ones available to consumers for Argentine ants, according to UC IPM, and its table of common products names TERRO liquid baits under borate. Sweet baits attract Argentine ants all year, which is why the sugar-water stations are the ones most kitchens need.
TERRO Liquid Ant Killer Bait Stations, 12-Pack, T300B
164,290 ratings at 4.6, prefilled liquid borax stations that owners say clear a trail within days.

| Type | Prefilled liquid station |
|---|---|
| Active | Borax |
| Count | 12 |
164,290 ratings at 4.6, the highest rating here and by far the most rated. Owners say ants flock to it and are gone within days, and call it good value. The complaint that recurs is leaking: a station that tips spills sticky liquid that is hard to clean off the floor.

TERRO Liquid Ant Killer 3-Pack Indoor Ant Baits with Borax
32,011 ratings at 4.6, the same borax bait in a smaller pack for one trail.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Liquid bait |
|---|---|
| Active | Borax |
| Count | 3 |
32,011 ratings at 4.6. Owners report colonies wiped out in a few days and find it cheaper than a professional spray. The liquid dries up quickly and can be sticky, so a large problem needs more stations than 3.

- A single trail by one window or door
Don't buy it if
- A large or recurring problem
UC IPM notes that prepackaged borate stations can kill foragers before they get home, which limits them against a major infestation. For that, it points to lower-strength liquid borate, 0.5 to 1% in sugar water, in larger refillable stations outdoors.
Put stations on the trail, then stop spraying
Placement decides most of the result. UC IPM advises putting baits near nests, on trails and along edges where ants travel, and spacing them every 10 to 20 feet around the outside of the foundation.
Indoors, put a station where the trail enters, wipe the rest of the trail with soapy water, and clear crumbs and sticky residue from around the sink and pantry. Do not spray while the bait is out. A spray kills the workers who would have carried the bait home.
Atticus gel reaches the cracks a station cannot
Gel baits come in small tubes and go into cracks and crevices where ants enter, says UC IPM. That suits a gap behind a counter or along skirting, where a station would sit in the way. The Atticus Savitri gel comes as 4 syringes of 30 grams each, with 2,270 ratings at 4.3.

2,270 ratings at 4.3, a syringe gel for the cracks and gaps where ants come in.

| Type | Gel, syringe applicator |
|---|---|
| Count | 4 x 30 g |
2,270 ratings at 4.3. Owners like the syringe, the lack of smell and the way it sticks to vertical surfaces, and several report ants gone within 2 days. Attraction splits them: some say ants ate it at once, others that their ants ignored it.

- An entry gap behind a counter or skirting
Don't buy it if
- Ants that ignore it, which some owners report
Hot Shot and Raid split owners more often
Ants do not all want the same food. UC IPM says thief ants and Pharaoh ants prefer protein or grease all year, and fire ants prefer oil, while Argentine ants take sugar. When a bait is ignored, its advice is to move the station or try a different product.
Hot Shot MaxAttrax Ant Bait, 4 Count
15,614 ratings at 4.1, a solid child-resistant station that does not drip.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Solid bait station |
|---|---|
| Count | 4 |
15,614 ratings at 4.1. Hot Shot owners like that the stations are solid, do not drip and are easy to place. Whether ants take it is mixed: some say it worked well, others that ants were not attracted at all.

- A home where a liquid spill is the worry
Don't buy it if
- Ants that want sugar water
Raid MAX Liquid Ant Bait Stations, 4 Count
2,629 ratings at 3.9, liquid stations for indoors or out that split owners on whether ants take it.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Liquid bait station |
|---|---|
| Count | 4 |
2,629 ratings at 3.9, the lowest rating here. Raid owners find the stations easy to use and easy to hide. Effectiveness is split, some calling it fantastic and others saying ants ignored it, and owners disagree on whether a station lasts months or a few weeks.

Expect fewer ants in 5 to 10 days
UC IPM says it can take 5 to 10 days to see fewer ants, and several weeks for control to be complete. More ants on the station in the first 2 days is the bait working, not failing. Replace stations when they run empty or dry out, because baits go stale and stop attracting.
