The Tomcat Press ’N Set is the trap to buy
Snap traps are what the CDC recommends for mice in the home, and the University of California calls them a great first step. Of the 3 snap traps here, owners rate the Tomcat model highest, at 4.4, and find it the easiest to set.
Tomcat Press 'N Set Mouse Trap, 8 Traps
1,704 ratings at 4.4, the best-rated snap trap here, easy to set and bait without pinching a finger.

| Type | Snap, press to set |
|---|---|
| Pack | 8 traps |
1,704 ratings at 4.4. Owners call it effective and easy to set and bait, and like that the design keeps fingers out of the way. Several say it is sensitive enough for the smallest mice, and easy to clean afterwards.
Durability is the split. Some owners reuse them many times; others say each trap gave only 1 to 3 good catches. With 8 in the pack, that still covers a kitchen and a basement.
Buy it if
- Anyone nervous of setting a spring trap
Don't buy it if
- Years of reuse; some owners get only a few catches each
Victor’s wooden trap covers a whole kitchen
The Victor Metal Pedal is the wooden snap trap most people picture, sold 12 at a time, which suits the University of California’s advice to set enough traps near every sign of activity.
Victor Metal Pedal Mouse Traps, 12-Pack
4,163 ratings at 4.2, the classic wooden snap trap in a 12-pack, with mixed reports on build quality.

| Type | Wooden snap |
|---|---|
| Pack | 12 traps |
4,163 ratings at 4.2. Some owners call them the best traps they have used; others found them ineffective. Build quality draws the same split, with some reporting traps that arrived poorly assembled. At 12 to a pack, a weak one is easy to replace.
Buy it if
- Setting enough traps to cover every wall
Don't buy it if
- Anyone who wants to reuse a trap many times
Victor Power-Kill Mouse Traps, 6-Pack
2,296 ratings at 4.2, a reusable plastic snap trap owners find easy to bait and clean, with mixed catch reports.

| Type | Plastic snap |
|---|---|
| Pack | 6 traps |
2,296 ratings at 4.2. Owners find the plastic Power-Kill easy to bait, set and clean, and say it lasts through repeated use. Catch reports run from dozens of mice to none at all, and some find the trigger too sensitive, snapping before a mouse arrives.
Buy it if
- Reuse over a long season
Don't buy it if
- A trap that needs no adjusting; some find the trigger too sensitive
Live-catch traps rate highest, and the CDC advises against them
The 2 best-rated traps here are no-kill boxes from Motel Mouse and GEROSSI. The CDC’s guidance says not to use live traps or glue traps, because a frightened mouse urinates, and that raises the chance of disease for whoever empties the trap.
Motel Mouse Humane Live Catch Mouse Traps, 4-Pack
1,616 ratings at 4.5, the best-rated trap here, with owners reporting several mice in a night and a 3-minute setup.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Live catch |
|---|---|
| Pack | 4 traps |
1,616 ratings at 4.5, the best rating here. Owners report several mice in a single night, a setup of about 3 minutes, and easy cleaning; a top-opening flap is the detail they praise. It is the trap for a household that will not kill a mouse.
Buy it if
- A household that will not kill a mouse
Don't buy it if
- Anyone without a safe, legal place to release it
GEROSSI Humane Mouse Trap, 2-Pack
5,120 ratings at 4.4, a live-catch trap owners find easy to bait and reset, with some reports of the spring breaking.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Live catch |
|---|---|
| Pack | 2 traps |
5,120 ratings at 4.4. Owners call it effective and easy to bait and reset, and some choose it as safer around pets. The recurring complaint is the internal spring breaking, and cleaning splits owners.
Buy it if
- Homes with pets, where a snap trap worries you
Don't buy it if
- A large infestation, with only 2 traps
So a live-catch trap only spares the mouse if you have somewhere legal and far enough away to take it, every time.
Electronic traps are cleaner, and less reliable
The University of California names OWLTRA and Victor as makers of battery traps that kill by electric shock, and notes that some homeowners have found them good at controlling mice. They cost considerably more than snap traps, so fewer get set.
OWLTRA OW-2 Indoor Electric Mouse Trap, 2-Pack
23,713 ratings at 4.0, the most-rated trap here, cleaner than a snap trap, with indicator-light complaints.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Electronic |
|---|---|
| Pack | 2 traps |
| Signal | Indicator light on a catch |
23,713 ratings at 4.0, more ratings than any other trap here. Owners call it effective, some on the first night, and cleaner than a snap trap, with an indicator light that shows a catch. The complaint that recurs is the light and the trap itself: some report units that stopped working, or a light that never flashed.
Buy it if
- Anyone who never wants to see the catch
Don't buy it if
- A trap that must keep working for months
Victor Electronic Mouse Trap, 2-Pack
1,757 ratings at 3.8, the lowest here, easy to bait, with reports of the light and the batteries giving out.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Electronic |
|---|---|
| Pack | 2 traps |
1,757 ratings at 3.8, the lowest here. Owners find it easy to bait and cleaner than a spring trap. The flashing light that signals a catch stops blinking for some, and both durability and battery life draw mixed reports.
Buy it if
- A clean catch in a cupboard
Don't buy it if
- Anyone who wants the light to be reliable
Skip glue boards, whatever their ratings
Glue traps sell in packs of dozens and some rate as well as the traps above, but they are not ranked here. The CDC advises against them for the same reason as live traps. The University of California adds that adult mice often detect and avoid the glue, so a board catches mostly young ones, and a stuck mouse may not die quickly.
The CDC also says to keep every trap and bait out of reach of children and pets; dog-safe Christmas decorations covers the same habit for the season ahead. A plug-in repeller will not do this job; do ultrasonic pest repellers work explains why, and why sealing every gap wider than 1/4 inch matters as much as the traps.
