What a Grading Slab Actually Certifies
A graded card in a sealed holder certifies two things: that it is genuine, and what condition one grader judged it to be on one day. It does not certify value, and the gap between those ideas is where money is lost.

A grading company does 2 separate jobs. It authenticates the item, confirming it is what it claims to be and has not been altered. Then it assigns a condition grade on a published scale and seals it in a tamper-evident holder.

The scale runs 1 to 10 and the top is narrow
Grades run from 1, heavily damaged but identifiable, to 10, which the major companies describe as effectively flawless under magnification.
The distinction that matters commercially sits between 8, 9 and 10. A card at 8 is a nice card. A 10 of the same card can trade for a multiple of the 9, and the difference between the two is often invisible to the naked eye.

Four criteria drive the number: centring, how evenly the border frames the image; corners; edges; and surface, which covers print lines, scratches and gloss.
Centring is the one people underestimate. A card can be otherwise perfect and cap at 8 because the borders are 60/40, and no amount of careful storage changes it — it happened at the printing plant.
Authentication and condition are different products
Authentication answers whether the item is genuine and unaltered. Trimming, recolouring, restoration and outright counterfeiting are what it catches, and it is the part that protects a buyer from fraud.
Condition grading is a judgement about wear, made by a person, under a published rubric. Two graders can disagree by a point, and the same card resubmitted can come back different.
That is why cracking and resubmitting exists as a strategy: a card that came back an 8 can come back a 9 on another day. A grade is best read as a well-informed opinion rather than a measurement.

Population reports say how many, not how rare
A population report is the count of every example a company has graded at each grade. It is genuinely useful and it is routinely misread.
It counts submissions, not existence. A card with 3 examples at grade 10 might have 3 in the world or might have 300 that nobody has bothered to submit.
It also only counts that company. A card can be scarce in one company’s population and common in another’s, and the reports are not additive because the same card resubmitted appears twice.
Read a population report as a floor on how many exist, never as a ceiling.
The arithmetic of whether to submit
Grading costs a fee per card plus postage both ways, plus insurance, plus weeks or months of turnaround. That total is the number the uplift has to beat.
For most cards it does not. A common card that grades 8 is usually worth less after grading than the fee cost, and the slab does not rescue it.
Submit when 3 things are true: the raw card is plausibly a 9 or 10, the graded price for that grade is well documented, and the gap between raw and graded price comfortably exceeds the total cost. Bulk tiers change the arithmetic and only for genuinely large batches.

Slabs are not permanent and not identical
The holder is tamper-evident rather than indestructible. Cracked and scratched slabs are common in the second-hand market, and a damaged holder undermines the certification it exists to protect.
Labels are also not equivalent between companies. A 9 from one grader and a 9 from another do not trade at the same price, and the market’s ordering of graders shifts over time.
Verify the certificate number on the grader’s own site before buying a slab. Counterfeit slabs exist, and the certificate lookup is free.

What a grade never tells you
It does not tell you the card is valuable, because condition is one input into a price set by demand.
It does not tell you the price will hold. Graded prices move with the sport, the set and the franchise, and a 10 in a cooling market falls like everything else.
And it does not make the item liquid. Selling still means finding a buyer at your price, which is the same reality what holds its value sets out for handbags. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
Before you submit anything
Sleeve the card, then put the sleeve in a 35pt rigid holder, and keep both away from light and heat. Card sleeves and storage covers which sleeve sizes fit which cards. Most condition loss happens at home rather than in transit.
