Why Shower Liners Go Pink and Black, and What Stops It
The pink slime on a liner is usually a bacterium, the black spots are mould, and both feed on the same 2 things: soap film and damp. What clears each, what the EPA says about bleach, and 4 products owners rate.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains what grows on a shower liner and what stops it, then reads 2 liners and 2 sprays, ranked by rating and then by how many owners rated them on 10 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Pink film is a bacterium called Serratia marcescens
The pink or orange slime at the bottom of a liner is usually Serratia marcescens, a bacterium, not a mould. It grows anywhere from 41°F to 104°F, so a bathroom suits it all year. It likes damp corners, tile grout, toilet water lines and basins, and it feeds on the fatty film that soap and shampoo leave behind. So the pink comes back wherever residue and water sit together.
Black spots are mould, and damp is what feeds it
The EPA’s guide puts it in 1 line: the key to mould control is moisture control. Wet areas dried within 24 to 48 hours usually do not grow mould, and indoor humidity is best kept below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. The EPA’s bathroom advice is to run the fan or open a window while showering, and to clean more often where mould keeps coming back.
A liner bunched against the wall after a shower stays wet for hours. Pulling it fully closed so it can drip dry is the cheapest fix on this page.
