Pet DNA Tests: What the Result Is Worth
The breed pie chart is entertainment and it is mostly reliable. The health panel beside it is the part that needs care, because nobody regulates these tests the way human clinical genetics is regulated.

A dog DNA test does two separate jobs and they are not equally trustworthy. One compares your dog’s genome to a library of known purebreds. The other looks for variants associated with disease.
Breed identification is a comparison, not a lookup
There is no gene for “labrador”. What a test does is compare hundreds of thousands of points across the genome against a reference panel — a library of samples from dogs whose breed is documented — and report which patterns match.
That makes the size and quality of the reference panel the entire product. A test comparing against 350 breeds it assembled itself is doing something different from one comparing against 430 verified by a registry, even though both print a pie chart.
Accuracy is highest for purebreds and first-generation crosses, where the signal is strong. It degrades with each generation of mixing, because the segments inherited from any one ancestor get shorter and harder to attribute.

The health panel is a screen, and a screen is not a diagnosis
A screen reports that your dog carries a variant statistically associated with a condition. It does not report that the dog has the condition, will develop it, or needs treatment for it.
The gap between those two statements is where the harm in this category lives. In 2018 a comment in Nature by veterinary and genomics researchers warned that direct-to-consumer pet genetic tests lack the validation standards applied to human clinical genetics, and described owners making irreversible decisions on the strength of unverified results.
Nothing about that has been resolved by regulation since. These tests are sold as consumer products, and the interpretive burden sits entirely with the owner.
The one result worth acting on
MDR1 is the exception and it is a real one. A variant in the ABCB1 gene leaves affected dogs unable to clear certain drugs from the brain, and the consequences of getting it wrong are severe.
It matters because it changes veterinary practice directly: a dog that tests affected needs different dosing or different drugs, particularly for some antiparasitics and sedatives. The variant is most common in herding breeds — Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shelties — and in their crosses.
Take that specific result to your vet and have it recorded on the file. It is the one line on any of these reports that changes what happens to the dog in a clinic.

Why two tests disagree about the same dog

This is also why a result that contradicts a shelter’s guess is not evidence that the shelter was wrong. A shelter is guessing from appearance, and coat and build are controlled by a small number of genes that do not track ancestry reliably.
