Blot fresh wine with a white cloth, and keep blotting
The Carpet and Rug Institute’s first step is to blot a liquid spill with a dry, white cloth or plain white paper towels, and keep going until the area is nearly dry. White matters: a printed or coloured towel can transfer its own dye into damp carpet. The CRI warns against scrubbing or using a brush, because bristles fray the pile and change its texture.
Work cleaner from the edges in, then rinse
The CRI’s second step is to put a small amount of cleaner on a white cloth, not straight on the carpet, and work it in gently from the edges toward the centre. More product is not better. Once the spot has gone, blot with clear water once or more to lift any remaining cleaner back out.

A portable cleaner does the rinse step best
Spraying clear water and sucking it back out is the CRI’s last step done by machine. The Bissell Little Green is the most-rated of them, at 4.5 across 94,744 ratings, and portable carpet cleaners, compared ranks 6.
If the mess is a pet’s rather than a guest’s, dog urine in carpet covers the smell as well as the mark.
