Roku’s HD stick is the plug-in-and-go pick
The Roku Streaming Stick HD replaced the Roku Express in 2025 as Roku’s entry-level player. The Fire TV Stick HD is Amazon’s newest HD stick, on its 2026 Fire TV interface with Alexa+.
Owners of the Roku describe a stick that works as soon as it is plugged in and switches between apps quickly. Fire TV Stick HD owners find it easy to set up, and then divide on Wi-Fi drops, the remote and apps they could not download.

Owners praise how well it performs, how easy it is to set up and how quickly it moves between apps, and like that it turns an older TV into a smart one. It draws power from the TV’s USB port, so no plug is needed.
The remote divides them: some love the voice button, some find the remote poor. Reliability reports are mixed too.

Only the Fire stick has Wi-Fi 6 and a wired option
Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 on the Fire TV Stick HD. Roku states dual-band Wi-Fi on its HD stick without naming a standard.
The bigger difference is the fallback. Amazon sells a right-angle USB-C Ethernet adapter for this stick, stated at up to 480 Mbps. Roku’s sticks take no Ethernet adapter at all, so a Roku in a room with a weak signal can only be moved closer or given a stronger router. Owners find it easy to set up and like the look. It works well with older Samsung TVs for some, while others report Wi-Fi connection problems.
The Alexa remote and app support draw mixed reports, with some owners unable to download apps they used before. Amazon lists a 90-day limited warranty.

Roku works with AirPlay; the Fire stick runs on Alexa
Roku lists Apple AirPlay and HomeKit, Google Home and Alexa for its HD stick. An iPhone can send photos and video straight to the TV, and a Google Home speaker can control it.
The Fire TV Stick HD is built around Alexa+. Its remote talks to Alexa, and Amazon lists checking Ring cameras and dimming lights from the TV. In a home already run on Echo speakers, that is the pull.
Both run from the TV’s USB port, with no power brick
Each stick plugs into an HDMI port and draws its power from a USB port on the same TV, over a USB-C cable in the box. Roku gives 5V at 1A and about 2.2W while streaming.
Both are slim enough not to block the HDMI port beside them, and both remotes carry TV power and volume buttons. Both pair Bluetooth headphones for listening without waking the house.
A 4K TV needs a 4K stick instead
Neither HD stick outputs 4K. On a 4K TV, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K adds 4K with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver for rooms far from the router. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max adds 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB of storage.
