Surge Protector Joules: What the Number Means
A joule rating is how much surge energy a protector absorbs before it stops protecting. Eaton's bands are 600 to 1,000 joules for a TV and 1,000 or more for a computer. What else on the box matters as much.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page reads Eaton’s buying guide and the UL 1449 standard as NEMA describes it, then sets 7 surge protectors against them, ranked by rating, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

A joule rating is how much surge a protector absorbs before it fails
Eaton defines the joule rating as the amount of surge energy a protector can absorb before its protection circuitry fails. A higher number generally means more protection and a longer life. Eaton sorts the ratings into 3 bands.
| Joules | Eaton’s protection level | Eaton’s best use |
|---|---|---|
| 400 to 600 | Basic | Lamps, small electronics |
| 600 to 1,000 | Moderate | TVs and entertainment systems |
| 1,000 and up | High | Computers and networking equipment |
So the answer to “how many joules” is 1,000 for anything you would hate to replace. Every protector on this page except 2 clears that line.
For a TV, buy 1,000 joules or more, with coax protection
A TV sits in Eaton’s 600 to 1,000 joule band, and the console or streaming box beside it pushes the case past 1,000. If the TV takes a cable, satellite or antenna feed, a surge can arrive down the coaxial line as well as the power cord. Tripp Lite’s TLP1208TELTV covers both.

For a computer, Eaton’s band starts at 1,000 joules
Computers and networking gear sit in Eaton’s top band, above 1,000 joules. Five protectors here clear it, from 1,440 to 4,000 joules.

Eaton says a protector wears out, so check its protection light
Eaton says surge protectors lose effectiveness as they absorb surges, and names 3 things that decide how long one lasts: its joule rating, how often surges hit, and how severe they are. Many show an LED or sound an alert when the protection has gone. Without automatic shut-off, Eaton warns, a protector may keep passing power after it has stopped protecting.

Two best sellers sit below the computer band
The Tripp Lite TLP606B and the YISHU strip both list 900 joules. That is in Eaton’s band for a TV, but short of the 1,000 it gives for computers.

UL 1449 is the mark to look for, and VPR is the number beside it
UL 1449 is UL’s safety and performance standard for surge protective devices, which were once called transient voltage surge suppressors. NEMA’s surge institute says it is the only common testing format in the industry, run by labs such as UL, CSA, Intertek and MET Labs.
So read the box for 3 things: the joule figure, a UL 1449 listing, and a protection light. To switch a lamp on the same strip by schedule or by voice, the Kasa smart plug profile covers the plug that does it.
