Keurig 2.0 is the reason the question exists
Keurig’s main K-Cup patent expired in September 2012, and other brands started selling pods. In autumn 2014 Keurig launched the 2.0 brewer, built to refuse old or unlicensed pods. Owners of 2.0 brewers still report that many reusable cups do not work in them.
