Rechargeable vs Alkaline Batteries: Which Device Gets Which
Alkaline AA cells are 1.5 V and keep for 10 years or more in a drawer; NiMH rechargeables are 1.2 V and survive 1,000 or more charges. Which devices suit each, and which ones the EPA says never go in the trash.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page sets alkaline and rechargeable NiMH AA batteries side by side on voltage, shelf life, recharges and disposal, using what the packs state and the EPA’s published guidance. The 6 packs are chosen as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Rechargeables pay off in devices that eat batteries

The alkaline cell began as a race between 2 toy cars
Alkaline cells replaced zinc-carbon ones that ran down fast, and the change came from an engineer at Eveready, the brand now called Energizer.
Rechargeables never go in the trash; alkaline usually can
The EPA lists 5 rechargeable types, NiMH, Ni-Cd, lithium-ion, nickel-zinc and small sealed lead-acid, and says none should go in the trash or the household recycling bin. Take them to a battery recycler, a store with a takeback service, or a household hazardous waste collection. In most communities alkaline AA cells can go in household trash, the EPA says, though it still recommends a battery recycler. For rechargeables, the EPA advises bagging each cell or taping over its terminals before drop-off.
Which rechargeable pack to buy
The eneloop and the Amazon Basics 2,000 mAh pack above are the 2 to start with. Rechargeable AA batteries compared ranks 5 packs and explains why the higher-capacity Amazon Basics cell is rated for fewer recharges. For how battery capacity works in a power bank, see portable charger mAh explained.
