Pillow Loft: How High a Pillow for Your Position
Loft is a pillow's height. Low is 3 inches or less, medium 3 to 5, high over 5. Side sleepers need the most, stomach sleepers the least, and shoulder width moves the answer.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains how high a pillow should be for each sleeping position, and shows 3 pillows ranked by rating and then by how many owners rated them on 7 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was slept on or tested.

Loft is height: low, medium and high in inches
Loft is how tall a pillow stands on the bed. Sleep Foundation’s guide to pillows sorts it into 3 bands: low is 3 inches or less, medium is 3 to 5 inches, and high is over 5 inches.
| Loft | Height | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 3 inches or less | Stomach sleepers |
| Medium | 3 to 5 inches | Back sleepers |
| High | Over 5 inches | Side sleepers |
A listing rarely states loft, and calls most pillows medium. Height under your head is also less than height on the shelf, because every fill compresses.
Side sleepers need the gap to the shoulder filled
On your side, a pillow over 5 inches high has to fill the space between your ear and the mattress, so your neck stays level with your spine. That gap is the width of your shoulder, which is why a high loft is the side sleeper’s band, and why broad shoulders push the answer higher still.
An adjustable pillow solves this without measuring. You start full and remove fill until the neck sits straight.

Buy it if
- Side sleepers and anyone unsure of their loft
Don't buy it if
- A nose sensitive to a new-foam smell
Back sleepers need medium loft and neck support
On your back, the head needs lifting only enough to keep it from tipping back, which puts most back sleepers in the medium band, 3 to 5 inches. Too high pushes the chin toward the chest.

Stomach sleepers need the lowest pillow, or none
Face down, the head is already turned to one side, and a high pillow bends the neck back. Low loft, 3 inches or less, is the band, and some stomach sleepers use the thinnest pillow they own, or none.

A softer mattress lowers the pillow you need
A soft mattress or a thick topper lets the shoulder sink further, which shrinks the gap a side sleeper’s pillow has to fill. A pillow that was right on a firm bed can feel too high after a 3-inch memory foam topper goes on.
For how topper materials differ, see memory foam, latex or fibre. For 8 pillows ranked by position, see bed pillows compared.
