This page sets out the standard white elephant rules, the house rules worth agreeing first, and the kind of gift that gets stolen, as How we choose describes for pages without picks. It rests on published accounts of the game, read on 13 October 2026. Nothing here was handled or tested.

The game runs in 6 steps, open or steal

White elephant, also called Yankee swap or Dirty Santa, runs the same way almost everywhere. The 6 steps:

Step What happens
1 Every player brings 1 wrapped gift, usually at a similar value.
2 The gifts go in a central pile.
3 Players draw numbers at random to set the turn order.
4 Player 1 opens a gift, and the turn ends.
5 Every later player either opens a new gift or steals one already opened. A player who is robbed opens a new gift or steals from someone else.
6 The game ends when every player holds a gift.

The steal is the whole game. Player 1 has the worst seat, because they open blind and can be robbed by everyone after them, which is why the final-swap rule exists.

A gift freezes after 2 steals in most groups

The common limit is 2 steals per gift: once a gift has changed hands twice, the person holding it keeps it. Without a freeze, one popular gift can circle the room for 20 minutes and the game never ends. Some groups use 3 steals for a large party, so that the favourite gift travels further.

Player 1 gets a final swap in many versions

In many versions, once everyone holds a gift, player 1 may take one last turn and swap with anyone, even for a frozen gift. This balances the first seat, which otherwise had no choice at all. Groups that skip it should say so at the start, since many players expect it.

A $25 cap is easy to set and easy to shop

The game only works when the gifts are close in value, so the host sets one price cap. White elephant leans to funny and impractical gifts; Yankee swap leans to useful ones that players actually want. Pick one before invitations go out, because a joke gift in a Yankee swap feels like a cheat.

House rule Common choice Why it matters
Price cap 1 figure, stated in the invite Keeps the steals fair
Steal limit 2 per gift Stops the game running long
Final swap Player 1 only Balances the first turn
Gift style Funny (white elephant) or useful (Yankee swap) Sets what people bring

Gifts that get stolen are small, useful and for anyone

A gift that survives 2 steals is one that most of the room would use. Games that a group plays on the spot do well, such as Bananagrams or a Rubik’s Cube. So does anything for a desk, a car or a kitchen that fits anyone, like an insulated tumbler from Owala, or a small speaker from the portable Bluetooth speaker comparison. The stocking stuffers guide lists small gifts with deep owner records, and the hostess gifts guide covers the bottle-and-candle end of the range.

Gifts that stall are the personal ones: a size, a scent, or a hobby only 1 player has. Those belong in a named exchange, not a stealing game.

Secret Santa is the other game, and it has no stealing

Secret Santa assigns each player 1 named recipient in advance, so the gift can be personal and nobody loses it. White elephant gives nobody a recipient, which is why the gift has to suit anyone. If a group wants both, run the Secret Santa first and the white elephant after, with a lower cap for the second. For a teenager’s swap, the gifts for teens guide covers what that age group uses after December.
