USB-C Laptop Chargers: What the Watts Have to Match

A USB-C charger and a USB-C cable each have their own ceiling, and the lower one wins. Cables without an e-marker chip stop at 60W, whatever the charger on the other end claims.

USB-C charging negotiates: the laptop asks for power, the charger offers what it has, and the cable reports what it can carry. The lowest of the three is what you get, which is why a 100W charger can still trickle-charge a laptop.

Standard USB Power Delivery tops out at 100W, at 20 volts and 5 amps. Revision 3.1 added an Extended Power Range that reaches 240W, at 48 volts and 5 amps, for the largest laptops.

Cables without an e-marker stop at 60W

A USB-C cable carries a chip, the e-marker, that tells the charger what it can handle. Any cable rated above 60W has to have one. Without it, the link is capped at 60W however capable the charger and laptop are.

Above 100W the requirement tightens again: an EPR cable needs an e-marker set as EPR-capable for 48 volts and 5 amps, and USB-IF requires the 240W mark to be printed on the cable or its moulding.

This is the most common reason a new charger disappoints. The cable in the drawer is often the 60W one that came with a phone.

What your laptop actually asks for

The simplest guide is the adapter the maker ships. Apple lists 67W, 70W and 96W adapters for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 140W for the 16-inch, and it tests the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 on the 70W adapter.

A 100W charger covers a laptop, a tablet and a phone, and splits its output when more than one is plugged in. That is why the wattage on the box is a total rather than a promise for each port.

Watts through a hub are not the watts at the wall

Plugging the charger into a hub rather than the laptop adds a third device to the negotiation. A hub’s pass-through port delivers less than it receives, because the hub keeps some for its own ports, and how much it keeps is on the listing rather than on the box.
