Throw Blanket Fabrics: Sherpa, Fleece, Knit, Faux Fur
Sherpa and fleece are usually the same polyester with a different pile, and faux fur is polyester too. The real choices are synthetic or cotton, and how much pile is waiting to shed in the first wash.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains what each throw fabric is, then reads 5 throws ranked by rating and by how many owners rated them on 4 October 2026, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Sherpa and fleece are the same polyester with a different pile
Fleece is a knitted polyester brushed into a short, even nap. Sherpa is a polyester knit with a longer, curly pile meant to look like sheep’s wool, usually bonded to a fleece face: the Bedsure sherpa throw pairs 220 GSM flannel fleece with 260 GSM sherpa. Faux fur is a polyester pile left longer still. The warmth rises with the pile, and so does the loose fibre waiting to shed.
| Fabric | Usual fibre | Warmth | Sheds | Care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flannel fleece | Polyester | Light to medium | Little after the first wash | Machine wash and dry |
| Sherpa | Polyester | Medium to high | Some, early on | Machine wash, low heat |
| Faux fur | Polyester | Highest | Most, early on | Often cold wash, dry flat |
| Cotton knit | Cotton | Lowest | Lint, not synthetic fluff | Machine wash |
| Wool | Wool | High, and breathes | Little | Gentle wash or dry clean |
The label names the fibre, and sherpa is not one
That label is the quickest way to sort a shelf of throws. 4 of the 5 throws on this page are polyester. Only the cotton knit is not.

Fluff on a new throw is loose fibre left from brushing the pile, and the shedding complaints on this page centre on the first wash. That goes for the 27,407-rating white throw above as much as for the faux fur below. Wash a new pile throw on its own, and clean the dryer’s lint screen afterwards.
Cotton knit is the throw that leaves no fluff on clothes

5,077 ratings at 4.7, a cotton knit that owners say gets fluffier after washing.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.

Cotton breathes and leaves lint rather than synthetic fluff. It is the least warm fabric here, so it suits a mild room or a sleeper who runs hot.
