Stanley’s vacuum insulation is sealed with lead at the base of the cup. In January 2024, after dozens of owners posted home lead-swab results from the bottom of their cups, Stanley said the lead sits deep inside the product. Its statement said that once sealed, the area is covered by a durable stainless steel layer that the drinker cannot reach.
The FDA says no level of lead is known to be safe
The FDA’s page on lead in food and foodwares states that there is no known safe level of exposure to lead. That is why the agency monitors lead in food and acts against products that leach it. It is also why many buyers want no lead in a cup at all, however well it is covered.
Since February 2024, class actions have been filed against Pacific Market International, which makes Stanley cups, by buyers who say they were not warned that the insulation is made with lead.
