Countertop Ice Maker Not Making Ice: Fixes in Order
Most countertop machines stop for one of four reasons, and three of them are free to fix. Work through them in this order before deciding the compressor has gone.

Start with the water level and the float
A machine that runs a full cycle and drops nothing into the basket is usually short of water. Fill the reservoir to the maximum line, then check the float moves freely, because a float stuck high tells the machine there is no water to freeze.
A 26 lb machine cycles roughly every 6 to 9 minutes, so if 15 minutes pass with nothing in the basket, stop and look at the water rather than waiting.
Use plain drinking water. GE’s instruction for the Opal is that it “only requires the use of potable water”, and filtered water slows how quickly scale builds up.
Heat is the second cause, and it is invisible
These machines are small refrigeration systems, and countertop listings put their working range up to about 90°F. Above that the cycle slows, the ice comes out thin and wet, and the basket melts faster than it fills.
Move the machine off a counter beside an oven or in direct sun, and leave a few inches of clearance behind it so the condenser can exhaust. Ice melting in the basket is normal: these machines are not freezers, and melt water drains back to be refrozen.
A full-basket sensor stops a machine with an empty basket
Most countertop makers stop when a sensor reads the basket as full. A splash of water, a stray cube or a smear on the sensor window will hold that signal, so the machine parks itself while the basket sits empty.
Wipe the sensor and the surrounding area dry with a soft cloth, empty the basket, then restart. It is a 30-second check that explains a surprising share of dead machines.
Descale on a schedule, with vinegar rather than soap
Scale is what turns a healthy machine into a slow one over months. White chalky deposits on the intake screen or the freezing prongs are the sign.
GE publishes the clearest schedule for its Opal, and it scales with water hardness: every 2 to 4 months in soft water of 0 to 4 grains per gallon, and as often as every 2 to 3 weeks above 10 grains. Its method is hot vinegar at 100 to 120°F filled to the max line, up to 3 cleaning cycles, then 3 rinse cycles with fresh water each time. For a deep clean it leaves the vinegar in for 18 hours with a vinegar-soaked towel on the ice chute.
GE also warns not to use soap in the water reservoir, and recommends a weekly sanitising cycle of 5 cups of hot water with 1 teaspoon of household bleach, again followed by 3 fresh-water rinses. A bottle of descaling solution does the same job as vinegar if you prefer.
When it is the machine rather than the maintenance
Owner reports across this category describe two failure points that maintenance will not fix: units that stop within about a month, and nugget machines that fail after roughly 6 months. At that point it is a warranty claim rather than a cleaning job.
